Speedometer reading zero with HESD removed '07

I recently bought a 2007 CBR1000RR track bike.

It has the HESD damper removed, and no warning light on the console. not sure how they did it, but looks to be done properly. The speedometer reads 0, and that is stopping my bazzaz quickshifter from working, according to Bazzaz.

I just replaced the speed sensor in the bike with a "tested good" replacement part.

Speedo still reads zero.

Any ideas on what might be going on here?

Will the speedometer never work without the HESD wiring?

A quick check from Google got me this pic, which looks like the HESD solenoid gets a signal from the ECU that the speed sensor provides. Which makes sense, as I think the damping is controlled somewhat by how fast your going. Meaning, less damping at slower speeds, more damping at higher speed. Just some thoughts.
