2002 vs 2003 954rr

Hi all,
I haven't posted on here in a while but i love my 2003 954rr and i have been riding on the street but its time i take it to the track. BUT my 954 i hold very dear to me and has a few custom mods than i care to put it on the track so i got my hands on a KILLER deal on a 2002 954rr to use strictly as a track bike. I am really comfortable on my 954rr so i thought it would only be good to be comfortable on a bike similar to what i know. ...

I was super excited; brought it home made her clean and all UNTIL i rode both bikes back to back and i was kind of disappointed. The 2002 is a bit shorter in the front and some of the riding positioning was different (foot pegs higher up, handle bars narrower, etc) I thought i was crazy but i had someone else ride both bikes and they confirmed.

Does anyone have any info on detailed updates between the 2002 and 2003 954rr (other than colors which is what i read) I can confirm that my bike is 100% but the 2002 i cannot nice its new to me. I dont think its new bike jitters since i can notice some visual differences. I attached a pic of both. white is the 2003 (my bike) 2002 is the new track bike

Has the 2002 bike been raised ,or is yours lowered, there does seem a bit more height at the front of the 2002, but could be an optical illusion

Not raised or lowered on my 03. I'm 6'3 so I need all the height I can get. I'm going to do some measurements on both bikes but the 02 definitely seems off

Re: 2002 vs 2003 954rr

Although they may not have been "made" any different, there is no telling what someone could have done to the bike. I would do just as you said and start taking some measurements. Fork height, rear sag, rebound, shock settings etc and compare the two. For example, my 954 is not like either one of yours at all. Mine is set up completely for rider/passenger comfort. I have lowering peg brackets for myself and my wife. My clip ons are above the triple tree. And I have custom built grab rails for my wife. Should be the most comfortable 954 out there!

Re: 2002 vs 2003 954rr

are you sure the '02 isn't a 929? My 929 is registered in 2002 but still 929. does either have a Power Commander or any engine/exhaust mods? TBH having have both 92 & 954 there still isn't much difference int eh riding position

as mentioned above there isn't anything different between the 2002 & 2003 954 models, although in Euro the later ones have lights-on all the time where as earlier ones had normal switch for the headlights.

I'm gonna be at the shop tomorrow measuring them up side by side. The pervious owner was about 5 inches shorter so gotta see what was changed around. Everything looks OEM but feels off when I ride both bikes back to back. Both are 954's both have power commander

As to the above comment yes both bikes were customized but mine was done by me. Mine is painted Cadillac pearl white. The red one... Idk but the guy did some red and silver paint. Not the worst but the red bike is gonna become strictly for track days next year white bike is only for street.

Re: 2002 vs 2003 954rr

The rear shock could be shimmed or an aftermarket link, the front springs could have been swapped out for a lighter rider, the forks could have been raised a bit in the top clamp...
As stated above, zero difference in production of the two years.

The 954 and 929 are wildly different bikes.... if you know what you are looking at. The headlight on the RR2 he has definitely matches up to a 954 and not the "rounder" 929, as do the fairings, etc. etc. etc...

Re: 2002 vs 2003 954rr

If all we have is those two pictures, there's no similarities in the stance - one is on a stand the other is leaning into a curb, lighting is different, left side of one right side of the other. Can't tell dick from that!

Although the colors do make a difference, it's well documented (by me) that the black/ti is the fastest. Since neither of yours are in OEM skin you could research the color code and determine which should be the fastest. FYI, the slowest 954's at the factory were painted red to give the "illusion" of speed. This all changes in Europe of course, where the blue/black is the fastest. Red remains the slowest on both continents. Hope this helps...

except in the case of @backdoc and the black OVER red '03s. some of those defy the color "restrictions"
