2002 954 Solid red light, no start

So i ran my bike out of gas while stuck in traffic. Had not started it for a month or more after that. went to start it and it fired up, but as soon as i started to give it gas it died and red light came on. Now it will not start.

I'm hoping this is just an oil pressure sensor or something simple.

Any ideas?

Tried jumping what i assume is the service connector, grey 2 wire connector that's not plugged into anything under the seat. I can't get it to flash any codes.

Re: 2002 954 Solid red light, no start

IIRC, the MIL will illuminate when the key is "on" and the bike is not running.

Have you properly performed the Self-Diagnostic Test as per the Service Manual? If you haven't one, they're downloadable (free). Just "google" it.

"will not start" meaning what...?
A. fuel pump not priming
B. no fire
C. will not "turn over"

Got it to start by holding the throttle open half way, but it's smoking something fierce! Not sure if it's burning oil, coolant or just some really bad gas.

C., i think it was vapor locked, just odd that it started at first and idled, then died when i tried to give it a little throttle. I held it at 3k and rev'd it a few times, it sounded fine, but so much smoke. Pretty sure it's now burning oil I hoping it's just a stuck oil ring, going to try running some seafoam through it, need to change the oil anyway.

Just a quick thought while browsing. Look up Fuel Pressure Regulator, or FPR here. There is a test to see if it's bad. Test is about 80% positive. You may want to replace it anyhow. Common problem when older FI bikes sit for a period of time.

Nice little puddle of oil under the bike this morning, looks like it leaked out the exhaust pipe. It's not looking good.

There are drain holes near the muffler to get rid of condensation. Itís usually really nasty looking (like oil). Any chance itís that?

Yeah, it appears it's bad. Pulled the vacuum line and it's wet. number 1 and 4 cylinders were not firing, fuel just shooting out the exhaust when i rev'd it.

Now where to find one.

It's not evaporating, definitely some oil going through one or all of the cylinders, the plugs were all wet looking, but not coated in oil like i was expecting. I'll upload a video of the fuel shooting out the exhaust.

Is this the part number for the fuel pressure regulator? Comes up as for a cbr600f4

Re: 2002 954 Solid red light, no start

Starting to think it's a blown head gasket now. Skip to 13 seconds and see it when it was running on 2 cylinders.

I replaced the plugs and the fuel pressure regulator and it was still shooting liquid out the exhaust. I let it warm up and it's running on all cylinders, even sounds normal, but lots of smoke coming from the ehaust. None of the old plugs were clean though like you'd expect with a blown head gasket. IDK. One thing i'm sure of is the stuff coming out of the exhaust is not gasoline, although it did smell of gas. I tried to light it on fire.

I'll make a new video of it now.

Yes, i replaced it, was easy. I used little vise grips to clamp the fuel line, not to hard, then just unbolted the old one, removed the line and put the new one in. I'm going to run it up and down the street tomorrow and then change the oil.

I know condensation will build up in the exhaust, but i've never seen anything like it's doing.

Checked the radiator, it's full and clean.

Re: 2002 954 Solid red light, no start

Some of the smoke is from seafoam in the tank, seemed to get better on the way back. motor was all ready warmed up. I had some seafoam in the crankcase too, not sure how much gas got in the oil, so i didn't beat on it too hard. Changed the oil and will test again. No doubt the fuel pressure regulator was bad, bike starts and runs fine now, wouldn't even start before without holding the throttle.

This was the initial startup after changing the plugs and fpr. I still thought it was pouring gas through the exhaust at that time.

Re: 2002 954 Solid red light, no start

I'll go with the bad FPR and Seafoam. The blue smoke could a combination of fuel, oil, and the foam. You might even want to take the mid-pipe off and try to dry out with rags the excess of fluid in the exhaust. But, I think you've narrowed the problem down. With all the fuel dumping into the cylinders, it undoubtedly washed the oil coating off the walls. May take a while to get back to normal, but I think you're on the right path now.
