Oil and filer changes

Daft question lads,i picked up a 2017 blade last month and after looking at the owners manual for service intervals it shows every 8k or annually for oil but only every 16k for oil/air filter,now i've always changed oil and both filters around the 4k mark or every year whichever comes first,and obviously with modern synthetic oils the intervals are longer but surely it would make sense to change oil filer every oil change and do the air filter while you are at it?

Air Filters in normal service can see a lot of miles. If you are in a dusty area, then I'd change/clean more often.

As far as oil filters, certain things can give longer life: engine metallurgy, manufacturing tolerances, the use of a magnetic drain bolt, oil filter media used and thinner, more modern protective oils all can contribute to oil and filter life extension.

I'm not a believer in manufacturer recommended service intervals. Sometimes they stretch them for demonstrating to bean counters a lower cost of ownership over a given expected service life. There's an expectation that the 1st owner will trade the vehicle within 5 years (there's data on this available). However, I wouldn't recommend the old advice of changing every 3,000 miles either, that's excessive, wasteful and can be harmful to change too often due to the oil not being in the proper pH range.

I knew a guy who let his Nissan sit long periods and every once in awhile would drive a few hundred mile trip and immediately change the oil, then flush a good quart or 2 through the engine, then put in new oil. I was on my way to 300,000 miles on my Nissan engine and would have made it had the car not been stolen; he wouldn't listen to me that he was wasting money and possibly damaging the engine.

My 2004 BMW 530i with N52 engine calls for oil change intervals at 15,000 miles. I change it out at 7,500 at the recommendation of BAVAuto. I've gone 15k several times, but I can feel the difference in the willingness of the engine to spin when I change it earlier, also I get lower oil consumption on subsequent changes. I have nearly 220,000 miles on this vehicle and no signs of needing an engine overhaul anytime soon- it's the other stuff that seems to need attention (LoL).

To be honest ive always changed oil and oil filter yearly,for the price of a filter id rather do it while i am doing the oil,and as this is a fairly new bike im getting the servicing done at the dealers so ill debate this more with them when i go for its annual check,thanks for the input mate.

I don't think they'll debate you if you ask them to change the filter as well. On my bikes I'm now doing an annual maintenance cycle also. Too much to remember whereas it was easy when I only had 1 bike to tend to and I could change oil/filter every 4,500mi or so.

I'm well behind on changing the dirtbike and lawn tractor oil. I just checked the oil in the lawn tractor and it looks so clean and I know it's been at least a year (but I don't think 2). The dirt bikes are all new acquisitions so they haven't seen a full year of ownership, but I've got to put in the magnetic/ safety wired drain bolts anyhow.

If im honest it was simpler when i had the 15 year old bikes with little or no stamped history,did the oil once a year,both filters and whenever something went wrong i replaced it,service schedules confusing but when you have a 2017 bike its worth keeping up with

That's when you begin with a notebook. Have clear jackets for service invoices and a log for owner maintenance. You can keep track of every replaced item including tires and then you'll know your ownership costs, when you did the action and mileage and time intervals. A good set of records will pay dividends if you ever sell it.

I'm thinking of doing this for our cars but I'll have to go backwards. Bikes- fuggetaboutit. I've done too much owner maintenance but I can at least put things like valve adjustments, which I've always had professionally done on the sport bikes.

I have a word document with details stored on for previous bikes as they had no service history and where 15 years old,this ones going to be kept serviced at the dealers and i will as usual make a note of stuff on a word document and store all receipts etc..i like to think im fairly organised even if my way of organising drives my wife mad

I’ve always used a service label underneath the seat, I put it in a transparent self adhesive pouch, I’ve also added info that I feel is important.

Choosing an oil is like choosing a religion. The good thing is that with oil you can change (although you will still be accused of heresy).

Jared had nearly 300,000miles on his daily driver/ Trackday 2002 F4i before it was destroyed by a car driver and he liked Rotella and the Walmart brand, Super Tech car oil. As long as you avoid energy saving oils and additives you’re fine. I also no longer buy expensive motorcycle oil except when goaded into it when I go to a shop- it’s easier than arguing with them about my oil choice.

If its a new bike and you're doing the first lot of miles then it's worth doing an oil change sooner as there may be an increased amount of swarf from where the engine was manufactured. Obviously all Honda bikes are perfect and this only affects other, lesser motorcycle manufacturers. So maybe say you're doing it for appearances sake.

Other than that yearly is fine unless you're on track in which case it pays to do it as and when you're nailing it.

Also gunks right, 10w/40 semi for an sc28.

It has had its first running in service im the second owner ,picked it up at just over a thousand miles on it,but i will be doing annual/4k services on oil
