1000rr owners!! Replacing my 954 Calipers / Lower Forks

Hi all,

I have a 954 race bike (see below pics) and i'm needing to upgrade my calipers to gain better brake performance. And before you say it yes I have tried almost every pad, brake lines master cyclinders etc.

My initial thoughts are that I will change out the lower part of the fork from a 1000rr that runs Radial Calipers, whether it be a 04 to 17 model?

Please could I ask some 1000RR owners if they could measure the top of lower fork to the wheel centre for me. (See pic below of my bike as an example) Also the diameter of the stanction would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Re: 1000rr owners!! Replacing my 954 Calipers / Lower Forks

Thank you.

I found out the following for info.

954 is 117mm

2004: 117mm
2011: 117mm
2018: 90mm (Note: This is an SP2 with Ohlins suspension so might well be different measurement to standard)

Re: 1000rr owners!! Replacing my 954 Calipers / Lower Forks

I'd be really interested to know if you manage to do this, it was something I considered when I fitted 929 forks to my SC33. I managed to pick up a pair of new (old stock) fork lowers very cheap so tried to unscrew the ends from my old lowers but without success. The are very tight and thread locked IIRC.

Re: 1000rr owners!! Replacing my 954 Calipers / Lower Forks

Why not just get a set of 1000rr forks? It would seem that if the tops won’t fit in the triple trees you could replace the fork lowers. The needle valves and perhaps even fork rods should be able to swap over also.

Another thing is, how much braking performance improvement do you need? Do you have a quantifiable measurement?

Yes they are supposed to be very tight but a bit of heat on them should do the trick! Hopefully!!

I thought about the 1000rr option but with them being a shorter fork than the 954 this will lower the front end too much for me. Also, I have MUPO K911 fork cartridges on my race bike so these would no longer be any use and I would have to buy a 1000rr set..£££££

Breaking performance wise, I can't quantify this entirely in terms of stopping power but what I can say is I have raced a Ducati 1299 Panigale and I could break later on that than my 954 so in terms of slowing me down.... better brakes has to be worth at least another second a lap for me...

Re: 1000rr owners!! Replacing my 954 Calipers / Lower Forks

it's possible to swap the lower part from the cbr 1000rr forks (04/07) on the 954 ones,on the italian forum (Fireblade.it) many members did that, you have also to put spacers between the bolts of the calipers because the 954 has bigger brake discs compared to the 1000rr ones.
if i remember correctly i have printed that topic,if i will find,i will give you better details

Hi yes I have just changed over the lowers on my forks. I actually used the lower with the stanction fitted and swapped over my MUPO cartridges, All works perfect! Brembos on order!

I was also amazed that the 954 mudguard fits the 1000rr!! Perfecto!
