Exhaust from around the spark plug

2000 929RR and twice now I've been out riding and I get a pop and then exhaust leak and loss of power, got it home and its #2 or #3 cylinder the spark plug is still screwed in but the coil pack jumps up and down from exhaust pressure, I reinstalled and ran fine for a day until it did it again. I dont think my head is bad because I can push the coil pack down and keep pressure on it and it runs fine. Has anyone heard of this? Is it catastrophic, or just something small I dont know about? Please help.

Re: Exhaust from around the spark plug

Maybe the coil has lost its grab on the spark plug, try new coils ,or at least swap them round

If the spark plug is still securely tightened then there would be no way for the coil cap to move. If there are gasses escaping from the spark plug hole, the plug or the threads are damaged. Do you mean the coil cap “vibrates” loose?

Yes, coil cap comes loose. My current plugs dont have the caps that screw on and off on, I bought new plugs that do have them but coils dont fit on them. I'll get new coils and go from there. If my threads are messed up is that fixable or just get a new head?

Re: Exhaust from around the spark plug

If you remove the rubber boot from the coil there is a piece of wire inside the coil that grips the threaded tip of the spark plug. Use a sharp pick to bend it out. Should be able to stick spark plug in coil without the rubber boot and the plug not fall out
