Is this slight movement normal?

I am currently replacing right clip on and I noticed there is a slight movement on the steering head lock nut I can twist it about 0.5 cm is this normal I take it shouldn't be because it's a locknut! Or maybe I'm wrong Any ideas Photos showing amount of movement enclosed

Re: Is this slight movement normal?

Just an update I decided to fiddle with the Bearing to see if it was tightly on and I could move it by hand and I was shocked that I could twist the whole Bearing assembly by hand the bottom bearing and the locknut Now I hate dealing with Bearing adjustment (never know if I've done it right) but even I know this isn't right I think I have to get the Haynes out and do a full bearing adjustment.

Every cloud maybe I was 'lucky' to have a small off last August cause wouldn't know about these loose bearings otherwise- I'm pretty sure bearings this loose are dangerous Could the bearings have come loose because of my crash the front of bike took a good whack but I could still ride it home Don't think my crash created these loose bearings? But would be interested to hear views thanks

There is some play that is normal between the cap nut and the lock nut, only because sometimes the lock washer doesnít line up perfectly to articulate with them. Iíve had some I had to loosen just a hair to get the tabs on the lock washer to line up. No worries.

Bill itís there, if you zoom in on the slot near the tank mount bolts you can see one of the tabs bent up in there.

Re: Is this slight movement normal?

But thinking how's it a 'locknut' if I can remove it with my fingers? I don't understand

Yes that's strange because in the photo the tab of the lock washer is bent up into the recess in the castellated nut. So it shouldn't move because there is also a tab on the inside of the lock washer that engages in a groove in the shaft. Could be that someone forced the locknut open without folding out the external tab, and because the inner tab is smaller, it got sheared off...so the lock nut can now move....
