Known CBR900rr issues? (w/ pics)

Hello all,

This weekend Iím venturing out to a nearby city to look at a 1992 blade for sale. Itís price is 400,000 Japanese yen and has 28,000 kilometers on the clock. Quick question: are there any known issues with that model? Especially it being the first year of production. Is there anything in particular I should look out for when I go look at it?

Thanks in advance!

Nice bike , strong price but for a 92 and decent mileage not bad, would you be exporting it back to your own country?

Re: Known CBR900rr issues? (w/ pics)

They’re tough mechanically, make sure it stops starts and runs. Biggest headache is the bodywork, the decals are almost impossible to find as Honda no longer stock them, so scratched, damaged and cracked panels can be very expensive to repair.

Also check for originality. unmodified, standard bikes are the most desirable. From the photos, that looks spot on, I’d buy it!

Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Yes, that’s the plan. I’ll be in Japan for about three more years. After that, I’ll bring it back to the U.S. with me.

Wouldn't have thought there would be a lot of 92's in the USA

Re: Known CBR900rr issues? (w/ pics)

Not a lot of "flaws" in the old girls. Honda made some ergonomic and/or convenience changes through the SC28's time, but everything was pretty much the same from 92-95.

Hard ridden bikes (aka wheelies) will lose second gear, and over time the regulator rectifier will burn out, sometimes for no reason, and sometimes because the stator hammers it with too much power. Both easily repairable, and not catastrophic. A well maintained engine (regular oil and filter changes) will last forever, and can go well beyond the 16k service inspection limit on the valve shim adjustments.

The carbs may need some work depending on the amount of operation it has seen recently, but they're easily worked on too. The electrical system is quite tame, as there are no overly complicated systems as on modern bikes, and Honda never had a problem with them.

Suspension is decent, but the fork oil may need refreshing. Check the obvious stuff, and let us know if you pull the trigger. GOOD LUCK!!

I would be trying to check as much history as possible and verify previous ownership. Mileage is reasonable, and that supports that a careful owner would have all service receipts and docs. I'd be alarmed if none were available, and that would make me look deeper straight away. There have been many horrors redressed with Chinese fairing and a replace speedo/odometer put in place.

I think he's asking about known mechanical and electrical faults. Like notoriously bad cams or something.
Far as I know, the Honda engines in these things are solid. The v-twin sport bikes suffer from some issues but the 4s are tanks.

Re: Known CBR900rr issues? (w/ pics)

Good point Skant.
This was my ride of choice back in the day and I wouldn't mind having one now.
None the 900rr's I had ever had any real problems. The water pump is destined to fail around 30k and begins to seep from the weep hole.
The Carbs are a little touchy and must be very clean for a smooth idle/powerband
The little triangle is a weak spot in the frame and will snap right there if you 12 it too hard
But yeah like you said its a tank
did the OP buy this beauty or what

nigelrb, for those of us who aren't english, what does "a tad dear" mean? also, do you ever sell a bike or just keep buying more? that's quite a list.
