I would like to fit just an end can ( Pipewerx) with a removable baffle and was hoping someone could tell me if i need to have the fueling altered.
Pipewerx website state no modifications to fueling are required.
Would the bike run too lean?
It has a standard air filter fitted.
I'm not bothered about performance, it has enough, only want one for the soundtrack.
If i have to have a power commander I'd rather just leave it stock.
Thanks
I have a 954 with a Carbon Can on it and have no fuelling probs at all. Some bikes might 'hunt' at idle, which is a cammy rhythmical up and down idle. It does the bike no harm.
I am sure you'll have no probs and will not need the Power Commander.
I agree with Nigel, Leigh. I had a 929 with various end cans on it and had no problems.
One of the benefits of electronic engines is that they aim to actively manage the ratio of the fuel to the amount of air.
With Gasoline/Petrol engines you control the air by the "throttle" which is connected to the butterfly valve (that "throttles" the airflow).
Given the requested amount of air, the carbs/injectors supply a matched amount of fuel.
With your FIE engine: in your exhaust downpipes, you will find a welded boss with a sensor screwed into it, trailing wires. That is the Lambda Sensor.
It measures the oxygen content of the exhaust gases and provides the information to the ECM.
If the engine is running lean (not enough fuel) = too much unburned oxygen in the exhaust = the ECM tells the injectors to put in more fuel.
Everything is easy at constant throttle settings, and becomes a mite more tricky under transients (snapping the throttle open & closed), but a well calibrated system (by the OEM) will significantly "self correct" for changes in intake restriction(*) and exhaust back pressure.
(*) By example, as your air filter becomes dirty over miles, it will become more restrictive, the FIE will accommodate the reduced airflow and reduce the fuel delivery. New filter in, back to full fuel delivery. Quite cunning really.
[P.S. The latest engines are more sophisticated and intend to run lean a lot of the time .............. but that's a whole other conversation with new sensors, knock].
I would think it would be fine tbh. If you did more mods to the engine/fuel/air system it would be worth getting it on a dyno, but with just the end can I wouldn't be worried. If its a US model with a Cat and O2 sensor it will probably sort its self out anyway!
on these bikes you can do a slip on without a fuel controller, if you install an aftermarket high flow air filter that's where you'll need a fuel controller or power commander.
Fitted a Scorpion Red Power Exhaust road legal with removable baffle and bike runs great.
Dont think I'll bother putting the baffle in as its not overly loud or offensive like some cans, just a nice deeper sound.
