Re: 929 or 954?  Should have kept...

Hi everyone. I am still trying to convince myself that buying my 954 was the right thing to do. I had a 929 and loved it, but I thought I would love the 954 even more....wrong! Here is my problem. The 929 is much easier to change the oil! I know some of you have been able to change the oil without removing fairings but I couldn't.(I am a 220lb. fatboy) and couldn't fit my hand through the right side hole, with or without the special Honda oil filter wrench!!! Next, my 929 seemingly had more power?? I did not dyno either bike, but I do top gear roll-ons with a friends bike to check for gains (or losses&#33 My 929 did better!!! I did the flapper mod. and the pair valve removal along with ram air to my 929 and I have not done those mods to my 954. The exhausts are identical(bolt on Wiley Co). I hope after I do the pair valve and flapper mods to my 954 it convinces me I made the right choice! I may have to break down and put a full Micron serpent on my 954 to make up the difference or start a nasty drinking habit! Any advice is sure welcome.

Re: 929 or 954?  Should have kept...

they are basically the same bike. aside from slight asthetic positives(or negatives depending on how you look at it), the bikes changes have not in my opinion warranted a 929 replacement yet. maybe the 954's replacement will be...we will have to wait and see.

Re: 929 or 954?  Should have kept...

I thought the '54 was supposed to have just a tad bit more power and handle a tad bit quicker that the '29. *Just from sitting on the two back to back the '54 feels lighter, more narrow, and all around more compact than the '29. *I do know that the mags say Honda reshaped the fuel tank and moved the rider closer to the front end for more feed back. *Last part was just what I read.

From sitting on them I do like the feel of the '54 mo' betta. *I'm just not willing to trade my '29 for it.

Re: 929 or 954?  Should have kept...

the 954 is the first honda i've owned. i never got a chance to ride any of honda's 900cc bikes...i just liked the 954 and what it was about and got it...17,000 miles later it is in the shop getting a new engine put in it.

that said, i have had our friend IcemannRR's 929 for a little more than a week now. he's let me keep it until mine is finished because he's insane.

that said, after riding the tit's off this 929 for a week, there is no way i would spend the extra coin for the 954.

929----good then.
954----gooder kinda, but not much or in ways that would REALLY justify the extra $$$$.

just a fun observation. thanks Brad, i owe you!

Re: 929 or 954?  Should have kept...

I had a 929 until I crashed it hard and then got a 954 and wish I would have saved some coin and put the extra toward upgrades on the 29. Over all I'm still happy with the 954. It just doesn't do anything better for me then the 929 did. At least my Ohlins shock and steering damper both fit on the new one.

Re: 929 or 954?  Should have kept...

I didn't see the point in updating to a 954. The 929 once properly sorted is a very good handling package. We'll see what happens next year eh?

Re: 929 or 954?  Should have kept...

My 954 has a stronger midrange than my 929 ever had and feels like it turns better, but I'm no expert
I don't think it would be worth the coin to update a 929 to a 954 unless you got a great deal, but once again i do feel the 954 is better

Re: 929 or 954?  Should have kept...

I might have a different opinion if I had owned a 929, but I made the jump from a 600 to a 954. Just so you know, I was also interested in getting a 929 in 2000-2001, but finances dictated I wait. I'm glad I did!

First, the 954 is a much more beautiful bike to my eye. I know this is opinion, but the new multiple headlight system, the more aggressive shape, the LED tail light, and the awesome swingarm make the 954 the more trick and attractive bike.

As for the handling, I only rode a 929 once, so I can't really say which is better.

By all accounts, the brakes on the 954 are superior to those on the 929.

In the power category, the 954 is the stronger bike by a pretty good margin. The 25cc increase in displacement and a little tweaking gave the 954 more HP, and more torque, especially in the midrange. To get the power of a 954, the 929 requires an exhaust system and a PCIII. That's a few bucks right there! For those of you that don't think that the few HP the 929 is down to the 954 matter....remember, the 954 was only down a couple HP to the GSXR1000 in 2002. Those few horses did matter to everyone when the 954 came out, because we all wished it had more. That's why I don't understand how some of you say a 5-10HP increase hardly makes a difference.

Overall, the 954 is the better, more powerful bike. If you take away all the mods you made to your 929 and compare it to a stock 954, or, applied the money you put into your 929 to improve the 954, the 954 is clearly the better bike. I'm not knocking the 929, I love the bike and almost bought one. I just think that it has an edge to it that the 929 does not.

I love my 954, and it will take a hell of a bike to make me want to get rid of it for a new one. In that respect, I know how all you 929 owners feel.

Ride Red!

But it only needed a new tranny, so don't anyone think that his motor let go. Still sucks that 4th gear went tits up on him, though.

Bryan, Patrick said it should be ready today - whOOt-whOOt!

I'm off to Barbados till next Friday, but will be looking to ride Sat or Sun. Call me then, or just come by the house.

Re: 929 or 954?  Should have kept...

IMO, unless you're looking for a trackbike, the added 25cc's don't make a bit of difference. The 929 has plenty of power throughout the band for any kind of twisty riding. I ride A group with a buddy with a totally modded out '54 (full system, pc3, flapper - pair valve mods, etc.) on my basically stock 9 (slip-on) and we ride right up on each other. My point is none of us, unless you're a professional rider, will come close to pushing these bikes to what they can perform ... we drag knees through all these turns so more power isn't really something I need.

The only reason I'd buy a '54 is if I got the '03 tit./black with a HELL of a deal.

No matter how beautiful a woman may be, some man somewhere is sick of her sh!t.

Re: 929 or 954?  Should have kept...

RE: my 2 cents on 929/954. I happen to have both the 929 and the 954. I have 14,000 miles on the 929 with no problems and 900 miles on the 954. So far I have to say, the 929 is a really nice bike. The differences with the 954 certainly are more midrange, and what appears to be more sensitive steering (mini tankslapper just changing lanes and hitting a expansion strip). Overall I really like my 929, I am wanting to like my 954 as well. What I really don't like is the added vibration that I think is more intrusive then on the 929.

I do not feel anymore vibrations on my 954 than I did on my 929.

Re: 929 or 954?  Should have kept...

I had a 929 and said that I would never go to a 954. Well, I did! I am glad I did too! In my opinion it is an all around better bike with a damper on it. That is right. With a damper on it. I like my 954 a lot. I will have to see how the next generation CBR is. Yes, I do believe that Honda should have skipped the 954 and built a Gixxer killer. But they did not. I still love my 954.

Ahhhhh?? Ummm? Hmmmm? Since when does 10HP = a couple If I remember correctly the 954 was at like 134Hp and the gixxer was at 144-146Hp
