My 900 blows Blue intermittently...

When riding behind my CBR, I noticed she smokes intermittetly, at higher RPM, but not all the time..Any ideas? She's got 20,000mi..The air cleaner is due for a changeing, but it's not rich-ness I smell, it's oil. I have 10-40 oil in her..She's not worn out yet is she?! I had hoped it would last longer than this!!! It dosn't do it all the time, just "When it feels like it"

And- Anyone know, or have a link to instructions on how to set the valves? Can this be done with the motor in the bike?

Pretty sure blue smoke=oil burning. Could be valve stems or piston rings, hard to tell. Don't think adjusting the valves is going to cure it, though. Did you break it in by the owners manual guidelines or the 'ride it like ya stole it' method?

Re: My 900 blows Blue intermittently...

see if it does it when you first fire it up after it has sat overnight .... if it smokes alot when fired up then stops i would say valve stems

if it smokes when you hammer it and really start pulling on the motor or does it now and then for no reason its probably the rings, BUT make sure that the crankcase is breathing ... i cant tell without looking but there is some sort of tube where the crankase breathes and if its plugged then you will get alot of blow by ... maybe someone else knows more about the specifics of your bike

Yeah, I think it's rings. I'm hoping one of them might be stuck, from sitting for over a year..it's not valve stems. I'm almost hoping the air cleaner is too plugged, causing the cylnder to pull air up from the crank-case..but that's probably just a pipe dream. I'm pretty sure it's rings, cuz she only does it when at high RPM's.

can a guy add Automatic trans fluid to the oil without damage to the clutches? Or Rislone oil treatment? In cars, it usually frees up stuck parts, cuz ATF is loaded with detergent.

I would say probably not, oil treatments usually have stuff that makes wet clutches slip.

i would guess rings, has the motor ever been revved before it was warm? this can cause rings to crack.
