954 engine modifications

I'm looking for relatively simple and inexpesive engine modifications other than Exhaust and PCIII mods for an 02 954. For example, I keep hearing about GSXR 1000 mods like adding a TRE or ARE, using 750 velocity stacks (adds 3 -5 hp), and removing the secondary butterflies (adds 3 - 5 hp).

explain this removing the secondary butterflies thing and gaining power. like I sorta see how you can gain power but those butterflies are there to smooth out the fuel delivery and the give a flatter power curve so wouldn't this mod give you more peaks in the curve and also screw up the fuel injection computer since it will still try to move those valves but they aren't there. just doesn't seem like a smart mod at all.

Erion has drop in cams that add 7-9hp if I recall correctly and you don't have to mess with timing or anything else. Thats probably a little further into the engine than you wanna get though isn't it?

if you can't convince them, confuse them.

oh yeah whats a TRE/ARE? also check out www.cbr929rr.com he put in bigger velocity stacks. he's done a bunch of stuff to his 929, its on the site. you can ask him stuff to he's in the forums all the time.

if you can't convince them, confuse them.

Re: 954 engine modifications

I'm not exactly sure about the butterflies. I want to say it was the secondary butterfiles, but I could be mistaken. A guy I ride with from time to time said he made some kind of modification to the secondaries and saw a slight gain in power. His GSXR hauls a$$. I'm no machanic by any means, but I want to get in to this more.

The TRE is a timing retarder that plugs into the bikes computer. The guy I ride with has a TRE on his GSXR 1000. It also bypasses the 186 restriction. He hit redline on his 1000 in sixth. I think the ARE is an advanced timing retarder. I think it allows you to make timing adjustments. Another guy I ride with has a busa with the ARE. For a bike without a turbo or nitrous, it is stupid fast.

I would consider a cam change.

I didn't know they had restrictors on them (I heard the busa does but nothing about any other bike having one). I'm not sure where you are but the May issue of Motorcyclist says the gixxer1000 tops out at 180 on the radar gun, the zx10r was the fastest of the 4 liter bikes at 186 followed by the R1 at 184 and the 1000rr at 175 (the honda's wet weight is the highest so that slows it down some, I sat on one the other day and it felt so much heavier then my 929 I was like what the hell)

As far as the butterfly thing I was just going by what I've read about them smoothing power and stuff, I'm no mechanic either. if you find out what exactly was done I'd like to know, I'm always looking for knowledge on how stuff is done.

if you can't convince them, confuse them.

Erion claims 6-8hp gains with them, they come in street or track version. if you do that while you're at it throw in the titanium valve retainers and the racing pistons and all the other stuff they have. all that and a custom map for a pc3 and you should be at or above the new 1000s.

From all that I have heard and experienced, international standards restrict top speed on motorcycles to 186 beginning in 2001. It may not be 186 mph but when the speedo reads 186 mph the ECU holds the motorcycle at that speed until you let off the gas. I had my 2001 GSXR 1000 indicating 186 mph a couple of times with around 500 to 1000 rpm to redline. Another friend has a 1999 busa that is unrestricted. His speedo tops out at 220 mph while the new busas speedo tops out at 185 or 190 mph.

I'll have to look into the Erion options. Thanks for the information.

Re: 954 engine modifications

Those cams may or may not get you any HP. Dan Kyle has put Moriwaki cams in a bunch of 929's, including mine, and they normally are only worth a couple of HP at most, sometimes nothing. What they will do is make the bike pull real hard to the limiter.

The 929 doesn't have the second set of butterflies or any timing retard like the Gixxers so there isn't all that "free" stuff to do.

yeah I was actually thinking it didn't have the butterfly valves but I didn't say anything. the Erion website claims 6-8hp, I assume the lobe profiles and such are bigger creating more valve lift so more power is built with each piston stroke but bigger cams also move your power up the rpm range further and can move your redline if they are big enough. My friend has a 600something cam in ihs mustang and it doesn't start building power till 3000 I think not that it matter cause it revs so fast that it goes from idle (1000) to 3000 without much effort.

Re: 954 engine modifications

i wouldnt fool with those cams unless i was planning a tear down with other extensive mods, just doesnt seem worth the money or trouble for the power ...... another thing is i bet they will make good power on a motor that NEEDS more lift and longer valve duration but on a stock motor i bet it aint all that
