Keep or sell the 900rr?

I just purchased my 900rr about a year ago. A few of you may know that I couple months ago I layed the bike down on its right side going around a turn. Im not sure how it happened but I'm assuming that there was gravel or sand on the road or something. Anyway, I was probably going less than 25MPH when this happened. Me and the bike seemed to be unharmed whatsoever. But when I tried to start the bike back up it did nothing. Upon further investigation, I found that there was a metal shaving between the flywheel and the clutch that was causing the engine not to turn over( I have no idea how it got there). So after putting the clutch back together(and breaking and replacing the clutch inner). I finally get the bike running. It is making a horrible rattling sound. I finally trace the sound(or so I thought) to my ignition pulse rotor which was bent(badly). I order the pulse rotor and generator and replace it, thinking that will cure the problem. It didn't. So now the bike seems to run okay although it is making a very loud clatter which seems to be coming from the cylinder head area. It appears to me that it may be time for a rebuild. So here's the question:

If I were to rebuild the motor in this bike, I would have close to $5000-$5500 in it. I could probably have a 929 or maybe 954 for just a little bit more money. Should I try to sell the bike as is, and upgrade to a newer bike? Or should I keep the 900rr and have it rebuilt, and hopefully last me for a long time?

I would definitely make the jump...you can find some 929/954 out there at a good price. Check www.traderonline.com do a bike search..they're everywhere.

Depends; is there sentimental value on the 900? If so, go on ebay find an engine, or rebuild. If not upgrade, but caution...I had a 900rr and now I have a 929. There is just something different about the 900RR..looks, feel, etc....

Upgrade if it's within your budget! I once owned a '97 CBR900 - very fast and nice bike - but you won't believe where Honda has gone with the 929 and 954, not to mention the new 1K.

If you really want a project then rebuild it. It is kinda old technology and upgrading will get you back onto the road without as much heartache.

Well, its not really in my budget. But neither is the $100+ ive been spending on the bike every month for 'little' things. I guess my main question is, does a 929 or 954 offer that much better handling/stability over the 900rr. Ive never had an opportunity to ride either of those bikes. Im a new rider and am not really concerned about the extra power offered by the newer bikes.

Re: Keep or sell the 900rr?

I own a 929, and had a 900 as a first bike. Both bikes are fast, the 900 was beefier and felt like it wanted to hold the road better..but it is substantially slower than the 929. The 929 feels lighter (almost flighty..the wind walks it alittle) on the highway at high speeds 90+....where as the 900 RR was anchored to the road...but, like I said...the 929 is much faster. As far as handling...the 900 seems much more stable at high speeds...and less stable at lower city speeds...and the opposite for the 929...Personally I would rebuild the 900 unless you have the coinage for a brand new liter. To me the 900 looks better than the 929 and 954....
