954 Maintenance Cost

What have you 954 owners paid to have your cam chain tensioner replaced and valves adjusted? My dealership wants $890 for this.

woot? Seems kind of high to me. My valve adj. on my 929 was like $200 or something. $890 seems high but I've never had the cam chains replaced. How many miles on your steed?

Replacing the cam chain is maybe an hour job if you have the right tools and knowledge of bikes. Valves maybe another hour. And what makes you think your cam chain is out??? because the mechanic says so Make sure its not your HTEV, it makes a similar sound of a worn out cam chain. I say buy the service manuel and buy the parts on your own. If you take your time and have some mechanical skill behind you im sure you can do the job yourself If you need a deal on Honda Parts let me know ill give you my race buddys #. He is a parts manager for a Honda Dealer and hooks me up pretty damn cheap. im sure he would cut you a break...
How many miles are on your bike?

I have 22,000 miles on my 03'. I have a full system and did the pair/flapper mods, so I don't know what other valve could be making the noise. The bike makes this nasty noise on startup now. Sounds like a clanking noise comming from the motor. I have done all of my own service thus far (several oil changes,3 coolant flushes, 3 spark plugs, new pads, blead lines, etc...) I do have mechanical knowledge and a service manual, but I don't have the patience to work with my fingers and hands all jamed up in tight spaces... Sparks plugs, IMO is such a MF'n pain in the ass because of the tight space.. The cam chain and valves have to be 2 X that.

Are you sure the valves need to be adjusted? If they were already looked at then why weren't they just adjusted then? Once you've got it all apart the fix itself doesn't take long.

Re: 954 Maintenance Cost

Heres the latest. I found another dealer who will do a valve adjustment and cam chain tensioner inspection (replace if needed) for $350. The bike is there getting done. I know this is simple to do, but I refuse to do it myself. If I tried it msyelf I am certain I would have gotten pissed off and kicked my bike off the stand and caused 1,000's in damage. Hopefully I will be riding tomorrow.
