Reason for too much oil from dealers

I was changing my oil on my 954 this evening and decided to look in my service manual for their instructions on changing oil. After reading it I noticed it was a bit different than the instructions in the owners manual. The owners manual says to warm the bike up for a few minutes then let it sit a few minutes before checking the oil and detemining if you should add more. The service manual says to warm up the bike for a few minutes then check the oil (not waiting for a few minutes). Then proceed to put more oil in if needed. If you follow the instructions in the service manual you will definitely overfill your oil. And if the dealers are following the service manual then they too will overfill the oil.
So I am wondering if this is the reason dealers are overfilling the oil on bikes they service. A dipstick would definitely go a long way to getting proper oil levels. But I guess they weigh too much.
Oh, if you are wondering I usually let the bike sit for a few minutes before checking the oil level.

Yes and I do believe that many times the tech's are way to rushed to take time and check then recheck properly, which is why I change my own in every vehicle that I own. thanks for bringing this up again.....

Re: Reason for too much oil from dealers

I doubt that any dealer's mechanic would refer to ANY manual on checking the oil for a bike they're servicing. They would service and check the bikes oil the way they do for every bike. Whether they check it or not is up to how good they are.

Re: Reason for too much oil from dealers

I add 3.7L. And I don't check afterwards.

I empty the bike; pour 0.3L into the bike to "wash" out the crankcase... let it drip; then add the 3.7L remaining.

The manual says 3.7L so I put in 3.7L ... if, for some reason, the bike doesn't have enough oil - there's a serious problem.

I fill it almost to the upper line. Run it for 3-5 minutes. Turn it off. Check the level after 3-5 minutes. Repeat if needed.
