Just had my first track day

It was at Willow Springs International Raceway near Palmdale California.
(The big track) What an experience. It is so much nicer not to have to
worry about auto traffic or various road hazards like sand or rocks. My 954
performed well. I am newbie to track riding so I am sure I didn't push
my 954 to anywhere near its potential. It was still fun none-the-less. The only bikes to pass me on the straights were a Busa, a R1, GSXR-1000, and a RC51 (race ready). In the corners it was a different matter. I was getting passed by all kinds of bikes. I have to learn to ride better. But I also have to get my bike to a tuner. It should have been pulling harder out of the corners. I attribute that to the altitude at which WSIR is located. And since I ride at those altitudes a lot I need to get tuned for it. Now, I am definitely considering not riding my 954 on the street anymore. It just won't be as fun. But I guess that is what my cruiser is for.

I did have a couple close encounters. I went wide and went off the track twice. Both times I just road it out and got back onto the track. Those of you who pooh-pooh steering dampers are nuts. My GPR steering damper saved me thousands of dollars today. Hitting the soft (e.g. sand, rocks, gravel) shoulders could have really done a number on me and the bike but the bike drove steady as can be and the result is not a scratch. That damper was/is worth every penny I paid for it.

That's all for now. I go back again tomorrow.

Cool man! Track daze are funn!!!

Yeah.. now that I have a bike with a damper I can really feel it working when the front get's light or the rear starts to swing a little quicker than I'd like.. that little something extra the damper does sure saved my bacon (and more than once.. )

Re: Just had my first track day

Congrats on what sounds like a fun day! If you want to get better and have a lot more fun on the track, I highly recommend going to a good track school like STAR or CLASS. You'll have a blast and learn a ton!

Good on ya...the track is the only place you can/should really see what your bike...and yourself are capable of.

Re: Just had my first track day

Just had my second track day. And I didn't go off the track once. It really helps knowing the track. I was kinda fatigued from yesterday so I didn't ride as hard as yesterday. I am a fairly old dude and I am amazed at the pace this young guys and girls keep on the track. They haul around the track seemly to be absolutely fearless. I guess as you get older your brain actually kicks in telling you that you are doing something very unsafe and falling down is a really bad idea. I am not sure I will ever become as fast as some of the folks at the track today but I at least had fun.

After the track day, I actually drove my bike home. I didn't want to have it trailered to the guy's house who brought it up to the track for me and then have to drive home. There are a lot of canyon roads between my house and the track. So I figured I could get some more practice in on the way home. The one canyon road I love to ride and is usually intimidating at times seemed rather wimpy to me on my way home. Granted I didn't bast down it like I was at the track but I went down it at my usual speed and it just seemed rather tame. So the stuff I learned at the track works pretty good. And has definitely improved my confidence level.

Looking forward to my next track day. Gotta start building the cash reserves.
