degreeing the cams in a 929

Have any of you guys ever degreed the cams in your 929/954? I am thinking of doing it myself and was hoping for some tips. Is it worth it?

You mean ignition advancing? Most who have tried it see little value, minimal, if any, hp gains.

Unless your doing something like changing cams, or decking the head and/or thinner head gasket, I doubt it worth doing it on a stock motor.

With aftermarket cams, degree them, otherwise its really not worth it.

Dan Kyle tried a few settings on mine with mori cams, race fuel and a decked head with back-back dyno testing. After hours of work, we found maybe 1 hp when advancing or retarding cams. And I say maybe because who knows, maybe the air cooled down a bit or something.

My advice? Don't mess with it. Most bikes respond well to degreeing, but the 929 doesn't seem to care. The 929 hits about 145 HP and then you have to do some real work to get beyond that.

when you say degreeing a cam what do you mean?

If you mean advancing or retarding the cam thats not what is normally called degreeing. Degreeing is just making sure the cam is right and is normally only done to a new cam that is installed.

You use the same procedure for "degreeing" only you advance or retard. I'm telling ya, don't waste your time. Install them "straight up" with the stock sprockets and think about other stuff you can mess with.

Actually, making sure the cams are right (to factory specs) would be called 'blueprinting'. Degreeing is when you alter the cam(s) timing.

no its not ... its exactly what i said, call any cam company and ask why do you degree a cam

not trying to get into a dick measuring contest here but thats what it is ... i have done it too many times on my street strip cars in the past

I agree, degreeing the cam is just setting it to where it should be. you just make sure it is positioned properly at TDC. advancing or retarding it is done after you put the cam at 0 (or whatever the number they use is, I'm not an expert) at TDC beause it has to be degreed before you can advance or retard the timing. If the degree of the cam is wrong then the valves will be opened/closed at the wrong time during the pistons movement up and down during its stroke.

if you can't convince them, confuse them.

I was considering degreing my cams but I don't know how munch. My bike is a '02 954 with a Akropovic evolotion series exhaust, K&N air filter, ported & polished heads, high compresson piston kit, and a lightend & rebalanced crank. So if anyone would happen to know what to set a facktoy cam at in this case it would be appreciated ,THANKS.
