buying a 954 RR but looking for some tips

Hey guys. I'm going to buy a '02 fireblade tomorrow !

I allready had a look at te bike last week and also made a short test ride with it. Everything seems ok. Tomorrow I'm going back, just to do a quick checkup and talk about the price. If that ends good, I'll be cruising home

Now, can anyone tell me some weak spots which I should be aware of regarding this fireblade model ? I allready know about the problem with the steer , but that has been properply replaced by Honda (like it should be done with every '02) .

I'm also trying to to a checkup on the cooling system. I'm planning to let the engine run for a while and wait until the ventilator kicks in. Anyone know which is the approx temperature this should happen ? ...

Any other advice is more then welcome !

sounds like you already know of the 1 problem and its already been taken care of so you've already made up your own mind so what do you need us for.

if you can't convince them, confuse them.

Re: buying a 954 RR but looking for some tips

My fan kicks on right at 212 degrees. After 21,000 miles I haven't found a weak spot. I don't think I could tell you to look for a weak spot in the frame or anywhere else because there arent any. The 954 is just a bulletproof bike.

Re: buying a 954 RR but looking for some tips

Welcome errorken! Is this a new bike from a dealership w/warranty, or a used bike with or without transferable extended warranty? Either way, I don't think you'll be disappointed. I have the same bike currently, have had a plethora of Hondas in the past, and BLEED RED! Although I only have 7K+ miles on mine, I simply don't foresee any problems that might loom in the near (or distant) future, 'cause it's a Honda. If it IS used, indulge in a little psychological questioning regarding the current rider/owner (is he a weekend warrior, a stunter, etc., has it been garaged, any dings, scrapes or dents), and go from there. Hondas take a beating and keep on ticking, so if you notice no obvious "interesting" noises from the engine or tranny, go for it if the price is right. From what I've read here, a stock 2002 should go for around $6500-$7000, in mint condition. Does it have any mods? Also, get used to a "clunky" transmission - it is common in Hondas, but an irritation at best, not a problem. What bikes have you previously owned?

Let us know how it goes!

Re: buying a 954 RR but looking for some tips

Thanks guys for the reactions !

So, about the vent, I supose you guys are talking in degrees fahrenheit ? That would mean that the vent should kick in at about 100 degrees celcius ? I will certainly look at that...

To answer one of you: I've had a '00 CBR600F before this one. So I'm allready aware of the clutch however, I've riden now 3 blades (1x'98, 2x'02) and all of them shift wonderfull. With my F I always had to concentrate to do it right , with these fireblades it went very easy ! So I even think the fireblade cluts will be an improvement for me.

(I have to admit, that I also rode a '02 zx6r some time ago, and this bike is shifts even better then the fireblades, but maybe it did shift TOO easy, you know what I mean )

The bike is second hand and I'm not buying it by a dealer. It has no scratches or anythink like that. The engine sounds beautifull . I also made a short test ride with it which turned out to be ok. So today I'm doing the last checkup and hope to ride this baby home !

I'm paying it ~ 9000 USD, but the new price here is about 19.000 USD. I live in europe. It has about 8.100 miles and the optios are : a duo seat cover and a toby steerdamper (don't know if this is the correct name in english ..). It has no waranty since its not by a dealer.

depending from your weight, you should consider changing the front springs. I went with Ohlins 0.90 (100 kgr plus gear)

hey...and...

Re: buying a 954 RR but looking for some tips

about the temp issue, all the blades are swiching on fans at 100-102 Celcius, this is the compromise for such a high HP output relatively to the limited space needed to be produced I would say...so dont worry about that.

Re: buying a 954 RR but looking for some tips

No, I'm not worring about that , I just want to make sure it turns on.
So I'm going to let it warm up until it reaches 100/102C and see if the vent kicks in. If it doesn't its broken...
