Do wheel bearings need grease?

Guy at the shop says no, but I remember seeing some on the old bearings when I had them taken out. Maybe the grease just acts as a barrier to keep dust out?

Re: Do wheel bearings need grease?

They are sealed bearings so cannot be greased.

Re: Do wheel bearings need grease?

Sorry, should have been a bit clearer - I know the bearings themselves don't get grease, but should there be some grease between the bearing's outer face and the black rubber dust cap to fill the air void?

Re: Do wheel bearings need grease?

The axl should get a very thin smear of grease to keep it from corroding, the excess gets wiped off by the bearing, thats probaly what your seeing.

Re: Do wheel bearings need grease?

I use a light coat on the axle and on the seals to help hold the spacers in while changing wheels. You'll get some rust if you never clean and grease it.

Yes, there should be some grease on the rubber ring to keep moisture and other stuff out of that area.
