black smoke

I fired off the 954 yesterday, it had been sitting for about 4 days. My father wanted to here my new bolt on so I started it and revved to to 4 or 5k with it cold and it was puffing black smoke. When it warmed it was puffing white smoke when I revved it to around 6k. The bike only has 2k miles on it and is still under warranty. Should I have it checked or is it normal? I didnt know if it ran rich when first started because of the fi. It is stock except for the bolton. I have only had it about a month.

Re: black smoke

Don't rev it until it gets up to temperature.

Re: black smoke

It is normal for new bolt-ons to smoke a little bit. How long has the bolt-on been on?

Yes it is used. I dont usually rev it cold or drive it cold for that matter. That was the first time and didnt want to tell my father and friend to wait till it warmed( didnt want to sound like a wuss, I guess). It shocked me when it puffed the black smoke and didnt know if it was something I should have checked. I am normally pretty anal about my bike.

Re: black smoke

The ECU will run in a rich mode while the bike is cold. It's kinda like an electronic "choke". Revving the bike while it's in this mode (or on an old bike, with the choke on) will blast black soot as the engine is running rich.

Don't worry about it dude.
