954 clutch problems?

I have a 03 954, when im riding @ around 3000rpm and rapidly roll the throttle the bike pulls for a split second and then it stops pulling and the engine just revs,, could that be the clutch? if so, how can my clutch go out when i just bought a new ebc clutch kit about 2mo ago? I have been trying to learn how to wheelie by using the clutch could that be the problem? The bike is rideable but i cant roll the throttle fast or else it does that, i have to roll the throttle smoothly so it can pull.

Re: 954 clutch problems?

Who put it in? Did they soak the plates? Was it a dealer, you? Did you replace the springs & ALL plates?

I wanna say not every plate is exactly the same...the last or first depending on your view might be a touch different/thicker/thinner. My teammate has a similar problem on his 929 and I remember him rambling about putting in the plates wrong?

Re: 954 clutch problems?

Sounds more like it's popping out of gear. Very common on CBRs that are abused with stunting.

Re: 954 clutch problems?

pay the extra for OEM, and get the barnett springs.

Or go lock-up like I did and never have that problem again

Re: 954 clutch problems?

If I recall, the inside friction plate has a larger inside diameter to fit over the jutter spring. If it's the wrong plate and it's pressed up against the spring I could see it cause slipping. Make sure you have enough play in the cable so the clutch is fully engaged. It's possible that it's worn out alredy if you've been slipping the clutch at high rpm trying to do wheelies. But I've had the same clutch plates in both my engines (18,000+ street miles, three years of road racing, and 4 or 5 trips to the drag strip) and I haven't had any problems.

Re: 954 clutch problems?

Ive used several diffrent clutch combinations when i was racing my 954. When i was all finished I ended right back with the OEM Friction and Steel Plates with Barnett Springs... And yes Clutching your wheelies will wear out your clutch

Re: 954 clutch problems?

That's clutch slippage, plain and simple. If you just put the plates in, then yeah, you did it wrong. Practicing wheelies will damage your clutch basket more than anything, shouldn't do TOO much to the plates. You haven't burnt them out yet. Did you use all of the friction plates? If so, I'll bet money you replaced the 2 "different" oem friction plates and the front and back of the stack. The one at the very back (as already said) is a different diameter. The EBC kit just comes with all the discs the same size. That EBC disc is covering and rubbing the judder springs.

Simple fix. Open it all back up and replace the very front and very back friction plates with the OEM plates. The ones in between can remain EBC if you so choose. And yes, the stock plates are about as good as you'll get.
