Headlight (HID) question

I thinking about getting an HID kit for my 1000rr for just one headlight. My question is a buddy of mine has the HID kit for his gsxr1000 setup on his low beam. He has to start the bike with his high beams on which in-turns turns the low beams off because he was having troubling getting the bike to turn over from all the juice that the ballast would pull from the battery. I was wondering if any of you have had this same problem 1#. 2# i want to be able to run the HID's by themselves without my other light being on (i prefer the black-eye look), so does anyone in here no how i could connect the HID's to my high beams so that i could start the bike and when im ready ill hit the switch to turn on the HID's but turn off the low beams?

any help will be appreciated

Re: Headlight (HID) question

You should have no problem. HID lights consume a little more current until the bulb warms up, but nowhere enough to cause problems. I run both HID lights on all the time. Your 1000rr charging system will always produce more current than your entire system can suck and keep your battery well charged even at idle. I use an electric suit in the winter too. You will be allright.

Re: Headlight (HID) question

sounds like your friend might have wired them wrong. but it seems hard to be able to put them in really wrong. the kit from xenondepot.com seems pretty straight forward as far as installation.

if you can't convince them, confuse them.

Re: Headlight (HID) question

I had a pair of HID's on my 929 and never experienced a problem. If I remember correctly, they actually consume less power than halogen bulbs.

Your buddy either hooked them up wrong or there's a problem with his bike's electrical system.

That's correct - HIDs only consume 35W, vs. the 55W draw of the stock bulbs. I've got HIDs on my 1KRR, and I've never had a problem.

Someone who got the kit recently told me that you no longer have to break the plastic off the one plug to make it fit. Pretty sure the spring pressure is still an issue though.

With the 929 you can start it fine with the low beam on, though if you turn on the bike with the high beams on (engine off) it'll cause the HID to not ignite (keeps flashing over and over dimly). It's correct the HID has less draw when on, but I think there is a large initial draw when the bulb is trying to light up. The with the high beams on it must not allow enough for that inital jolt to light it.

Uh, I beg to differ. If you do have HID lamps, those are not stock. According to the CBR1000RR Parts Catalog the part number is your plain run of the mill 12V 55W H7 bulbs. If you want HID on the 1kRR you have to also install a kit.

Re: Headlight (HID) question

From my personal experience. "HID Kits" (the plug and play kind) are crap. The best thing you can do is get a pair of Hella Ballasts or another kind (Denzo, etc..), and make your own HID conversion. The start up on the ballasts draw tons of power like everyone says. The best thing to do is wire them up using relays, and fuses. Most people run a larger amp fuse in the fuse box, which isn't the best for your wires. If you really want to make your bike stand out, and have a custom job. Retro fit a xenon projector into the housing. I would suggest a 350z projector (it's really small compaired to a E46 BMW). Valeo also make a great e-code projector. Just my opinion.

Re: Headlight (HID) question

Dont buy the cheap ones.. Thats all i can say.. My buddy did and they are crap.. They acutally fried the wiring in his GSXR...The problem with the cheap bulbs is they may say H7 and fit, but the watt ratings are higher than 55.. Hence fried wires...

I have a pair of Sylvania Silverstars in my S-10.. I love them and they are about $20 a bulb at an auto parts store. I just found out they make the H7 bulb that would fit our bikes.. These bulbs are a very clean white light with a minor blue/green HID tint to them.. Very high visibility.... I checked Ebay and just picked up a brand new set (2 bulbs) on Ebay for $30 shipped... I should have my set this week.. If anyone wants I can put them in and take some pics on how they look.. Just let me know...

We are talking about Actual HID lighting, not tarted up 100w H7 bulbs. $200 vs $20.
