Buying a 954

Hello all,

Well I sold my 2001 929 for a Kawasaki ZZR1200 last year (nice bike, but a stupid move on my behalf) and now I'm buying an 02 954.

The bike has 14K miles on it and appears to be in excellent mechanical condition (New tires and fully serviced) with only two minor scratches which look like the bike rubed up against something. The bike is coming from a dealership that I've had good experiences with in the past. My question is, is there anything major I should look out for on this beauty? My 929 was bulletproof and I hope this one is too. Thanks for the replies!

Re: Buying a 954

It's a Honda so you should be all straight. Is the dealer that you have good relations with offering any kind of warranty? Check to make sure the title is clear (not-salvaged etc.) Take a peek at the oil and make sure it looks clean through the window. Inspect the front forks closely for any leakage. Obviously if you can, take it for a spin around the block and check out the tranny (for peace of mind). That's about all I can think of off the top of my head. Just check all fluids, brake anti-freeze etc. If you can pull the plastics that's a bonus.

Good luck

Also check the chain and sprocket(s) for wear.

Re: Buying a 954

Aside from normal wear and tear items, I've had no mechanical or other issues with my 954. In fact, I like it better than my previous 929 as it's a bit more comfortable too.

You could inquire if the bike has had the Honda steering head mod done. I don't think it really matters one way or the other, but at least you will know. Apart from that the 954 is pretty much bullet proof in reasonable hands. Oh, and get a steering damper if it doesn't already have one!

Re: Buying a 954

Ive had my 954 (03) since new. Still no mechanically problems at all. My only advice to add would be to contact the previous owner and see if there are any service receipts he/she kept. Always nice to know that oil changes were kept up and sceduled maintenance were done. Enjoy!

LOL.....well, don't worry too much, with a power commander, a pipe and race cams you can make it as fast as the red ones!

Re: Buying a 954

If you can, put the bike up on stands and spin the wheels (especially the front) to look and listen for any warpage of the discs or rims. Also, grab the forks and try moving them to see if they're loose or bent.

Re: Buying a 954

I just bought my 2002 954 new from a dealer last year. I ran into a problem with the front tire developing 'cupping'. (I believe do to over-inflation of the front tire while at the dealer??!!!) You can check this very quickly by running you hand over the center of the tred... if is feels bumpy and uneven.... time for a new tire. (even if the trend looks brand new)
