A few Clutch Questions 929

I have an 01 929, has been a great bike for the last year at least - Never a clutch problem. I let my friend borrow my bike for a few days, and he said the clutch stopped working. I don't know too much about how the clutch works, but I assumed it can't just "go bad" (it starts by slipping, right?). I have the bike on a rear stand now, and I pushed the clutch thingy all the way (picture #2) and the rear wheel is still moving. Any Ideas?

Pic #2 me pushing the clutch all the way (or the most the cable would ever be able to pull it) - but it is still engaged in gear.

Re: A few Clutch Questions 929

The clutch actuator you have taken a picture is connected to a rod extending into the case (perpendicular)with a cam slot in the end of it, as it rotates it causes another perpendicular rod inside to pull and release tension on the clutch plates. Either of those could have snapped and that would cause the clutch to go completely....and instantly. if thats it...minor and inexpensive fix if you do it yourself. The biggest pain is re-sealing the case cover. A shop should still be relatively inexpensive.

Re: A few Clutch Questions 929

good info. I plan to take the cover off, but I'm waiting for my service manual to get here before I start the project. Thanks.

Re: A few Clutch Questions 929

Some 2001 929s had a cluch recall. And as I recall, it had something to do with that arm. Not all 01s needed it though. VIN number would tell you if it did (a dealer could tell you).

Inside the case...there is a small bushing...1/8th inch in diameter...don't loose it!

The 929 had two recalls...one for the clutch assembly and one for the fuel line. The hollow actuator rod was replaced by a solid one as part of the clutch recall. Do a search here and you should find more info...

Clutch recall info

Recall identifiers

Another identifier link (thanks Sirkbac)

Busted her open (well not busted! ) and that's exactly what happened the top rod broke where it connects to the other rod. I already ordered a new one and new spring. Although I'm a bit concerned with where the other part of metal went, or if it's just chillin' inside the case still?? Well Hopefully this fixes it. Thanks again!
