Thermostat? 1000RR 2004

Usually when I'm riding once the bike gets to 180 degrees it stays there (+/- 5) unless traffic where once the fan goes on (around 220) it was able to keep the temp from 225 to 180. Now, even in cold weather it seems like my bike is running a lot hotter and the fan can hardly keep up in light traffic. I think its the thermostat because when I start the bike and let it warm up to 150 before I take off the temp will slowly rise to 195 and then suddenly drop to 175 and then rise slowly back up to 190. Is the thermostat "sticking" and a signal that itís about to completely crap the bed?<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" />

Thanks for any help...

PS: I thought maybe the radiator was dirty so i took an air hose to it. It helped a little but not much.

Mine does that too, when I start the first time it gets warmer before it cools back down. I always thought of it as the thermostat opening, at startup. Like once it opens the temp will still rise until the cooler fliuds get near the sensor.

Mine 2004 does the same thing. First it gets quite hot and then it cools down. If I remember correctly, it didnt do that when the bike was new

In the city, it gets really hot. Fan is spinning all the time and can hardly keep up with the heat.

Re: Thermostat? 1000RR 2004

That drop in temp after the initial warmup is the thermostat opening and letting cooler coolant in from the radiator. Both of my bikes that have had digital temp gauges have done that...it's normal. Honda's tend to run hotter than most other bikes...fan will come on around 220 and might go as high as 225-230. I wouldn't be worried until it went up above 230.

For piece of mind, with a completely cold engine, put your bike on a center stand or have a friend hold it straight up/down and check the coolant level in your reservoir. You will see two lines on it. The lower one being the minimum level it should be when the engine is cold. If you're somewhere inbetween the two lines it's pretty much ideal, IMO.
