954 Trans issues??

I have a 03 954 with 8400mi and I'm having trouble with it popping out of second gear under a load like a false neutral. I do drag race the bike about once a week and sometimes I clutch it up in 2nd. I have also recently put a new clutch in at about 8000mi and I made sure I did it the right way (used the manual). I don't think that this has anything to do with the new clutch because it is only second gear. I did buy an extended warrenty but should I waste my time with the dealer just to tell me that they won't cover it I need some opinion's on what I should do and what the problem most likely is thanks for your help

Re: 954 Trans issues??

do you change without clutch from first to second? That has probably bent some sifth forks or transmission cogs have rounded up.

Take it to the dealer and say it just started doing that.

Re: 954 Trans issues??

I have been experiencing some issues with my 2002 954. It's got 36,000 miles on it. Sometimes/very rarely after shifting into second it will fall out of gear and go into neutral. It happens if I give it a half-assed shift into 2nd. Only thing I had to do to fix the issue was make sure I gave it a good full shift into 2nd. My buddy thought it might be a worn spring. I think it is just the way the bike was designed. Issue or not, it is definately not a warranty repair.

Re: 954 Trans issues??

I do clutchless upshifting but have always heard that it doesn't hurt anything. I have also made sure that I do a complete shift and it still pops out of gear. I'm kind of at a loss and not sure what I should do. Help is appreciated.

That is where you where wrong. Usually bikes can handle lot of clutchless upshifting, but it still wears out the transmission cogs. On race bikes it doesn't matter, because they change stuff on regular intervals and they have speed shifter that cuts the ignition during changes.

Re: 954 Trans issues??

Shift forks and the gears need to be checked. The gears are probably wearing down and no longer "locking" into each other to prevent the slipping. I sent mine to Fast By Gast and had them hardened and undercut. Most drag racers (like me), have this done. (Mine did the same thing)

Re: 954 Trans issues??

the setup guy at my local dealer told me they had a lot of 954s come back with this problem when the bikes were newer. I forget what he said the exact problem was but they had to rebuild a few of them.

if you can't convince them, confuse them.

Re: 954 Trans issues??

I have a 2003 954. my ride is in the shop right now. I bought the extended warranty from Honda. My bike slipped from 2nd to 3rd and started making a LOT of noise. I took it in and expected it to be covered under the extended waranty. Honda customer service (WHAT A JOKE!) said that if the shift forks were bent that they would not cover it. I told them to get it started because it is not abused. Now that the bike is in pieces and the shift forks are in great shape, Honda is only going to cover parts. WHAT A SHITTY WARRANTY!

Re: 954 Trans issues??

My 02 was similar with 6000 miles. It would hit a false neutral on the 1-2 shift every time if I wasn't firm and deliberate with my shift. It did it since I purchased it with about 2000 miles, and it was not abused prior. I have heard several people comment on the same thing with their 02 and 03 954's.

Re: 954 Trans issues??

Mine did it twice the other day when going flat out. I want to put it down to me being not firm enough with the shift but I hope it wont get worse. Last thing I want to do drop out the engine again.

Have already replaced the gearbox for it constantly slipping out of 4th due to poor badly installed rearsets not letting the dogs shift fully home as the gear shift arm used to hit off the frame.

Right,

A friend has a 954 that has done 85,000 miles. He had a new gearbox at 24,000 miles (jumped out of 3rd under load). Then he had another new gearbox at 48,000 miles (jumped out of third under load). He thought that when it got to 72,000 miles he would nedd another, but he didn't and it's been fine since. HOWEVER, he has made one significant change since the 2nd gearbox, in that he no longer does clutchless upshifts. Maybe it has nothing to do with it but it's a change that he made.

Honda UK replaced both boxes without any questions at all.

Cheers
Simon
