Re: Droppin a 954 Motor into a 929...

On Sunday my buddies 929 engine seized...it's a pile of scrap now. He was just riding in a straight line...hmmm weird.

He's set on purchasing a complete 954 motor with the computer and everything.

He called Dan Kyle and Dan said it wouldn't be a problem...I thought it was harder then that.

How hard is this going to be to install? We plan to drop the old 929 engine tonight and get it prepped for the new engine.

Any input? Advice?

Will we need a 954 swingarm also (because of where the swingarm mounts) or will the 929 swingarm work fine? Thanks in advance.

How did it seize up just out of the blue??

Maybe he should learn to check the oil before riding

Yeah, that's kind of freaky. Unless he was riding in a straight line at an 11 o'clock posistion on one wheel for a while.

Re: Droppin a 954 Motor into a 929...

Well he was riding along, it lost power. He pulled over...tried to push start it...the rear tire just skidded. Drained the oil...pieces of metal.

The local tuner/mechanic said it as toast.

If Dan said it was just a drop in, then it probably is...

I'd check to make sure it's not the clutchbasket or something. Wasn't there a recall on that??

Re: Droppin a 954 Motor into a 929...

I'd check for a second opinion.

I had a seized engine while riding... it's not just something that lets you pull over.

I thought the 929 had an engine mounted swing arm where the 954 did not? How does that work when switching engines?

Thats what I thought.

Well, my buddy said the engine starting making a 'hissing sound' and he pulled in the clutch...after a few seconds the engine shut off. When he got it stopped and tried to push start it the rear tire would just skid.

The guy who looked at the engine has been a bike mechanic for 20 years. He's the service manager for the local bike shop. If you want your gsxr1000 to make 175hp at the wheel...he's the guy to see. He has a dyno, does custom maps, rebuilds engines, etc, etc Damn good mechanic...

Re: Droppin a 954 Motor into a 929...

Bolt in deal. *Make sure to use the computer and whole FI set-up as it is different than the 929's. *If he's not changing the wiring harness to the 954's, make damn sure it is EXACTLY the same before you try using it. *Wires could be different even if the plugs are the same.

As long as you bolt up the engine bracket from the 929, no problem.

Re: Droppin a 954 Motor into a 929...

I think this is way too much hassel for what it's worth.

Check ebay, I see 929 complete motors quite often.

Re: Droppin a 954 Motor into a 929...

I just thought of something else, the intake snorkels are probably different as the diameter of the throttle bodies, and the airbox is different on the 954.

Probably an oil pump failure?

Re: Droppin a 954 Motor into a 929...

If he heard hissing, he probably lost coolant and overheated the thing
