Power commander and USB adaptor

I'm in the market to buy a laptop, but not many of the new laptops have a serial port to plug my power commander in to, I was wanting to know what are the chances of it working by using a usb to serial adaptor and pulgging into a usb port. I have been told some serial type devices will not work if using usb via an adaptor.

Re: Power commander and USB adaptor

That's what I use, a USB to serial adapter. Just make sure it has the proper Windoze drivers.

Re: Power commander and USB adaptor

yeah the adaptor works. I have IBM t41 laptop and IBM usb serial paraller adapter. this works with windows 2000 and Power commander 3.

Put it's little pain in the ass. because sometimes the laptop wants to configure the adapter to higher com port the 8, it put's it like 15 and the power commander center cannot handle that. So I need to remove some earlier port like 7 and then hook the usb adapter to the computer and configure it so that it uses the port 7. And everytime it's the same **** all over again.

Re: Power commander and USB adaptor

I believe Dell (3 of the Latitude range, D810, D610, D510) and IBM are the only ones still making laptops with serial ports. (correct me if I'm wrong)

Its a pain in the arse for this exact reason.

Re: Power commander and USB adaptor

Serial most likely, since the USB->Serial adapter should show as a COM port on your PC.

Re: Power commander and USB adaptor

I run Yoshi EMS's on my GSXR's and they have serial outputs, so if i want to use my lap top i have to attempt to use a serial to usb adapter.....i have found they don't work for ****!!

Even the computer shops will tell you they just don't work good. Unno why, but they don't.

I tried three of them and the one i have now is moody, and works sometimes.

I finally just run 3 serial cords hooked together out my house window to my bike and bag using the adapter.

LOL, thanks for the info conqsoft.

The usb->serial adapter I use I also use it for tuning my car. The thing works perfectly I've never had a problem with it.

Re: Power commander and USB adaptor

the map i have on my power commander (pcIII serial) has the entire timing graph set at 22 degrees. From what I've read the pcIII serial cannot change timing tables so it is nothing to be concerned with? Or should I attempt to zero it out? Thanks guys!
