Front end shudder on my 929

`01 with 31,000 miles on it. Power Pilots with less than 2500 miles on them. I've been getting a some vibration at around 70 mph. Getting shudders at low speed braking. Seems smooth thru the corners. I have the whole front end off because the forks are going to Dan Kyle for him to work his magic. All the bearings seem to be OK. The rotors don't seem to be warped. The tire is very slightly out of round, aprox .030", but seems to be balanced well. I don't do high wheelies, but this tire has gone thru a track day and was shagged pretty good. Ideas?

2500 miles with a track day on them. I'd swap it out for a new one.

Re: Front end shudder on my 929

Mine's doing the exact same thing. I'm nearing the end of the life of the Pilot Powers (hit the wear bars on the rear) and will be getting some M3 tires to replace them; the front still looks decent (I've used worse and called it good)

I'm hoping the issue will go away with the tires - I didn't want to bring it up unless the tire-swap didn't fix the issue.

Will do. Tires should be on tomorrow nite (unless it's raining heavily).

Re: Front end shudder on my 929

Mine does the same at low speed braking. Replaced pads and tires- still there. The wierd thing is that now my left side rotor is now rubbing on the cieling of the caliper... I have to wonder if that's related.

Re: Front end shudder on my 929

I have no clearance issues w/ my brakes.

I have the new rubber mounted: I've not had any shuddering - yet. To be fair, however, the shuddering was intermitent so I'll get some more distance on this weekend and see if it returns.

Right after I had some bad shuddering on a ride last week: I bled the brakes. I think that was around the time that it really started to get better and the shuddering was greatly lessened.

Re: Front end shudder on my 929

Ok. I experimented for a while and I got a fair bit of mileage on the tires this weekend. I was able to get it to shudder once since the new tires. That was when I applied both brakes from a medium speed all the way down to a stop and it didn't shudder until I was almost dead stopped.

I think it has less to do with the tires and more on the brakes. I'll check the pads soon enough and I might actually bleed the rear brake (it's been a while).

Re: Front end shudder on my 929

thickness variation of the rotors. Take a micrometer and measure the rotor thickness in 8 differant places going around the rotor. You want it to be the same all the way around. if there off, even by a couple thousands of a milimeter, it can cause what your feeling. (There might be a spec in the service manual.)

Re: Front end shudder on my 929

Good point. I'll check that out...

EDIT: I'd almost think that would be noticed every time I brake and not so infrequently as I've got right now. I'll check anywayz; I was thinking of replacing the rotors this winter.

Re: Front end shudder on my 929

I had front brake shudder on my 929 and it was one of my front brake discs that had warped, don't know why. It was worse after I fitted new pads.

Trying to find one brake disc was a nightmare so I got it skimmed and there's no problem now.

Re: Front end shudder on my 929

i think i may have the same problem, as sometimes when i brake it shudders, but only ever so slightly, and only when i have a certain pressure on - any more and it's ok, any less and it's ok - it feels a lot like chatter...
