2nd gear pops out?!! '03 954

After some more road testing, have determined that the tranny only disengages under load in second gear (usually pops into neut.) Can this be adjusted, repaired by user or am I looking at a whole new transmission?

Thanks!

2nd gear is gone. Same that happened with mine, but 4th also went out. Replace 2nd gear. If you are drag racing, you can send it to us or FBG or Superbike Mike's to have it undercut. I did all gears on mine, but I race every weekend.

You can adjust this back to normal by replacing the gears that have worn dog teeth. 1st and 2nd have a wide ratio and get the most wear. Gears are about $35-70, depending where you get them. A shift fork is likely to be bent from the hammering. That's about $500 and twice that much for labor.

Re: 2nd gear pops out?!! '03 954

Same exact thing happened on mine. It would pop out of 2nd under anything more than 1/2 throttle. It turned out to be a bent fork and was replaced under warranty.

Thanks to everyone for their input! I've never been a member of a forum group before. It's great to know that there are people with the same interest who are more knowledgeable than me that I can Q for an honest answer.

Thanks again.

More 2nd gear Q's

Okay, so whats involved in working on the 954 tranny. Am I going to have to drop the motor, (and remove the swing arm as well) flip it and split the case, or is there an access type pan or cover. If I have to remove the motor, then I'd rather go ahead and get all the parts to rebuild the engine while I have it out.

Thanks in advance

Yep, you get to pull the motor and split the cases. I think the only bike with a cassett or cartridge style tranny is the CBR1000RR in the Honda line.

I've had 7 Honda's never had any trouble with the gearbox.

People that have had trouble with 2nd gear is because they are very rough
with the gear changes,

& pull 2nd gear wheelies.

so don't put **** on Honda's, they are the best..

I've had 11 dirt bikes, & 7 road bikes,

never had gear trouble with any off them....

Do a bit of Drag Racing on a prepped track with stock gears. That should give you a problem.

...............and anything will last if you baby it. I have a "Sport Bike". This means I can push the limits with it. The Honda's limit is the 2nd gear most times. I'm glad you have had good luck though.

Re: 2nd gear pops out?!! '03 954

Often times, poor shifting technique can lead to the bike dropping out of second gear. It's while jamming it back INTO second gear that ugly things can start to happen (i.e. bent shifter forks and dogs). My old 98 VFR is notorious for this.

I try to squeeze the tank with my knees and time the clutch pull/upshift sequence as smoothly as possible to avoid the shifting problems. The Sato rearsets that i have on my 954 have really smoothed out the shifting action, way beyond what the stock linkage was like. And they look good, too!

What does squeezing the tank have to do with shifting?
