Fuel pump issue?

Hey all, the 'Blade is at it again... I went to take it to work this morning and was greeted by a non-stopping fuel pump, argh!

I hopped on, turned the key and flipped the kill switch, which usually produces the normal "whirring" of the fuel pump on prime for 2-3 seconds. After the normal 2-3 seconds the pump kept going, making a different sound which to me seemed to sound like a pump that didn't have any gas to suck in, or had a kink/clog in the outlet...

I tried it a few times quickly and the same thing happened... When I got home tonight I gave it a quick try and same thing, no happy whirring sound, just straight to the same problem.

I checked, and yes I have gas in the tank (not a ton but not yet on reserve). Anyone have tips on what to check or where to start looking before I rip it apart? I'm not quite sure where to start on this one (relay, wiring, fuel lines)...

Thanks!

Re: Fuel pump issue?

Is the fuel filter clogged? It could be.

I would pull the pump, run a hose into a container of fuel and manually start it to see if there is a flow of fuel. The pump itself coulf have gone bad.

Hopefully someone that knows that bike better than myself will answer shortly.

Re: Fuel pump issue?

Ok I've got the whole thing apart and have done the following:

- Cleaned out tank (had some small crap in it)
- Removed fuel pump and blew out all lines & filter... All were clear.
- Reassembled pump & put back on tank

I want to test the fuel pump and see if it makes the same sound before reassembling the bike and have read alot about just jumping the wires to the battery and see if it pumps, but want to be sure I do it right. Can someone confirm?

- Put a little gas in tank
- Put banjo bolt back into pump outlet (no hose attached, can't get it undone "safely" from fuel rail)
- Place tank on bucket, submerge return line in clean gas
- Connect 12V + to brown wire (there are two, one with black stripe, one without... Which one or both?)
- Connect 12V - to green wire

After this the outlet (banjo bolt) should start spitting gas, and the return line should suck up some gas, right?

Re: Fuel pump issue?

Sounds about right, but I would wait for one more person to confirm. You might want to PM Abtech or SilverBullet. Both of those guys can tell you with 100% certainty.

Welcome to Fireblades! You might try posting your question in the RC51 section, not in an old thread in the Fireblades' section.
