Chain goes up to swingarm?

I'm wondering if i need to adjust the chain on my 929. The specs say 40-50mm freeplay and my chain seems to fall within this, but i've noticed i've started missing gears and getting a box of neutrals just as i'm about to hit a very scary corner! I can push the chain up so that it touches the swingarm. Is this normal? Am i measuring incorrectly, i measure from the top of the lower chain + push up= 40mm? Any ideas? thanks

Re: Chain goes up to swingarm?

Are you pulling the chain down 1st when you measure it?It makes quite a difference. My 929 gearbox was a bit like yours if you weren't positive with the changes(allways change up on a false neutral).
I started using Spectro Gold oil and it made a huge difference, gears just snicked in nicely.

1.75 inches. Man that a ton more than it said in the manual for my 94 900RR. If I remember right it was 1 - 1 1/8 inches. Was the amount of slack different on the older 900RRs

Re: Chain goes up to swingarm?

I keep thinking mine looks loose, then I measure it and it's fine. Like Ab said, a smiling chain is a happy chain, and mine definitely "smiles".
