HELP! New CBR 1000RR Spewing Green Stuff

Need a tech to help me sleep

-- Brand new 2006 CBR 1000RR with 411 miles on the odometer. I have been very gentle with this bike - basically waiting for the 600 mile service before I have my way --

This evening I wanted to go for a ride -- here is what happend -->

10/13/06 7:00PM Prepare for ride
  • Opened garage door, wheeled CBR out to driveway and parked on side stand
  • Start engine noted idle seemed to be higher then normal
  • Noted rough idle and slight idle pulsation during first few seconds of running
  • Noted visible exhaust smoke very faint
  • Left bike to idle warm up
In the time it took to put on a jacket, helmet and gloves

Brother and wife start screaming and I quickly approach the motorcycle from inside garage
  • Thick white smoke emanating from side fairings, and front - blowing up and back
  • Electric fan could be heard
  • Noted antifreeze puddle on ground beneath motorcycle
  • Temp gauge reading at 206 Degrees Fahrenheit
  • Shut engine off immediately via on/off switch
  • Key Left On cooling fan remained running continuing to blow smoke back
  • Noted antifreeze spewing from front of radiator
  • Noted antifreeze on right side fairing
  • Noted antifreeze leaking from tube on lower right side of bike
  • Noted staining on header and radiator
  • CBR decals on right side fairing welted
  • Allowed bike to cool before wheeling into garage
  • Antifreeze continued to drip out
I doesn't look good --

Wait 'til it cools down and then make sure your radiator cap is on tight.

Cap is on tight - There is a split in the front of the radiator. I have pictures...bike was fine when I parked it.

That's what warranty is for

By the way...you must be a cop...that's quite the attention to detail.

Re: HELP! New CBR 1000RR Spewing Green Stuff

Dark Jedi - not a cop

Warranty is for Chevrolet -- I want a new bike! Think I'll get away with it? I bought a 1995 CBR 900RR in 1995 -- In 2003 I listed the bike on ebay with 6000 miles. I was feeling froggy so I listed it with a brief description --> 1995 CBR 900 RR - Adult owned - Descripition "FLAWLESS". I sold the bike for $6500 and my one word description was never disputed.

My point here is in my book - this bike should go to the pile - Ok maybe not the pile -- but you know this is the beginning of a nightmare - Honda built on a Monday.

Re: HELP! New CBR 1000RR Spewing Green Stuff

Your radiator splitting probably spewed coolant on the headers and caused all the white smoke. If the temp gauge only got to 206F than the engine never overheated. The bike is fine...and the radiator should be covered under warranty.

Re: HELP! New CBR 1000RR Spewing Green Stuff

Breathing easier BUT--

I thought the bike ran hot from day one. I have seen as high as 234 at idle. The fan came on and blew off some tremendous heat. I have hit 200 on the interstate - on the throttle a bit.

The decal on the right side blistered the second day I had the bike. Service said it was just the decal. The decal is now a mess -- blistered from the heat

What temp do you need to worry? Whats going through my mind now is melted rings, scratched cylinders and a head gasket in the spring. I have no experience with this type of probem. I know when you cook a car engine, somewhere down the road it pops the head. Am I out of line here?

Re: HELP! New CBR 1000RR Spewing Green Stuff

to be honest, the bike sounds like its been running hot from the start. i own a 954, and even on a 100+ day on the freeway at speed only see 186-187. sitting at a stoplight 217 at the most, and the fan comes on at 215. the blistered decal deal would piss me off if it is the stock exhaust. i doubt that there has been any serious engine damage, but have it checked out.

from another completely anal person about maintenence and such i feel your pain.

You shouldn't have a problem getting the bike fixed at a dealer under warranty.

Re: HELP! New CBR 1000RR Spewing Green Stuff

a member on here (maybe Pete?) did enough bitching about a peeling decal to get the whole fairing replaced. press them a little and they should fix everything that went bad.

if you can't convince them, confuse them.

Recall on the 2006 CBR 1000RR

I wanted to say THANKS!

I took my bike to the dealer -- service indicated that there is a recall on the 2006 CBR 1000RR -- On certain bikes the radiator is missing bushings on the radiator mounts. The radiator is "rigid mounted" to the frame. The radiator will flex and crack. I was told it would take about a week to get my bike back and they would check into my other complaints.

Have your VIN checked to see if you are part of the recall.
