lower triple clamp

was wondering if anyone knew the difference between the lower triple clamp (steering stem) on a 929 compared to a 954? I'm swapping a extra pair of my 929 forks to a hawk GT but i will need to buy another lower triple clamp. The part numbers are different, so anyone know?

Re: lower triple clamp

Depends on the year. The last year of the 954's (I think the 03's) had tapered bearings on the triples, as opposed to the conventional bearings used on the 00-01 929's, and (I believe) 02 954. The 929's had silver fork caps from what I found and the 954's had anodized blue. On the earlier 954's, it was a light blue, and on the later 954's it was a bright blue. I have 954 forks on my 900RR and they have the light blue caps (with conventional OEM bearings).

Other than that, the 929/954 triples are the same I believe. If you wanted to install tapered bearings in you 929 headstem, you could use the 954 setup.

Can you find anything on Ebay that suits?

Re: lower triple clamp

You have it backwards. The early '02 models had the good bearings, an upgrade from the 929.
Then some people started crying about the steering being too quick, so Honda issued a voluntary downgrade to the old style bearings for those that wished.
The 954s built later in '02 and throughout '03 all had the old-tech bearings in them.

Re: lower triple clamp

Thanks for that info! That's important knowledge I am glad to know.

What's up with the different shades of blue for the fork caps then? How can you tell what year they cam from?

There was a recall in the UK for all the '02 954 blades to have the triple clamps and bearings changed. The reason was that in some instances the bike could go into a violent tank slapper. This occured in Germany and i believe it was on test.

Re: lower triple clamp

Yeah, that's what I said.
Some people whined because they couldn't handle it. It was never a recall in the U.S., just a voluntary downgrade if you desired to make your bike old tech.
Funny how all the new bikes have tapered bearings now.

Re: lower triple clamp

Stupid thing is, if you don't get recall mods done, the buyer can beat you down when you sell it

Re: lower triple clamp

Like I said, it wasn't a recall here.

It always interests me why Honda (and others) don't have a worldwide recall policy. Ok if it's something specific like the California only bits and bobs, but you would think that something common would be a problem wherever...
