Chain tensioner

Hi all,

Two days ago after working hours i decided to take a ride near the city. I was staying on a red light and a loud noise came out of my engine. It sounds like a chain on the metal. I suspected the cam chain. After 4000rpm the noise dissapears. Under, you can hear it very loud.

Now i suspect the cam chain tensioner.

I will dismount this piece but i don't know how to test it. How i can find this piece si faulty?

Re: Chain tensioner

I had an issue with a tensioner years ago on a different inline 4. I took the tensioner apart and discovered a burr that stopped the progression of the unit. I took a fine tooth file to it and that fixed it up.
I haven't done any research on the 54's unit but I would guess that it is probably fairly easy to remove the actuator and inspect the mechanism. At least this would eliminate free movement as a problem. Good luck.

Re: Chain tensioner

Just had mine replaced at 23,000 km. It was noisy but not (yet) a problem.

A common Honda weakness apparently.

Another poster reported swapping it for a manual job made in the US but found no improvement.
