954 blew spark plug out of head

Anyone have any good explanations for this?

When I pulled the head off the threads for the spark plug were completely gone. There were no metal shavings in the cylinder from losing the plug. There was a lot of carbon crap in there, like a lot of burnt oil. The cylinder walls are fine leading me to believe rings are ok. Trying to figure out if oil got in the cylinder and due to the increased pressure from the oil maybe that is how the plug came out. Could a valve seal have let in that much oil?

New head is on the way but I want to know why this happened.

Thank you all.

Re: 954 blew spark plug out of head

It was likely over torqued during a few spark plug changes. It just popped due to the wear.

I wouldn't worry about another head. While that one is off just get a heli-coil
Heli-Coil ( HeliCoil Inserts ) Helicoils Screw Thread Inserts | Emhart.com
MSC Search Results and keep on riding. It's cheap, safe, and effective.

Re: 954 blew spark plug out of head

That does not explain the excessive amount of oil/carbon built up in the cylinder. There was enough to vaccuum out with a shop vac.

Re: 954 blew spark plug out of head

Pictures? Carbon buildup on the outside indicates a prolonged leakage and the threads polished out may prove that it rattled loose for a long time. This carbon buildup should be sooty, but not oily. There can be a source of oil from the seal cover surrounding the area, or the camshaft cover getting loose itself (real bad when that happens and you'll have oil dripping from the seep hole next to the exhaust header as the warning before a camshaft goes snap.)

There is supposed to be a crush washer on each new sparkplug that helps lock it in place. Everytime you remove a sparkplug, I hear its a good idea to get a new one to be safe.

The good news is that this is an easy fix and a good machinist will charge you pocket change for this.

Re: 954 blew spark plug out of head

Maybe a bad valve guide? Maybe that cylinder hasn't been firing? Maybe a leaking head gasket?

if it were my bike, I would pull the cylinder head off, disassemble it and have it rebuilt or reconditioned. Also Check the head matting surface for flatness.

Maybe the piston rings are bad? Did you do a cylinder leak down test?

When you do get to installing the new spark plugs use a little bit of anti-seaze compound on the threads. helicoil the spark plug hole with the head off the engine.

I'm not a super pro at engines, but I will say pull the head off and fix it. Change the piston rings and have the cylinders honed if you can. If you get it that far tore down then replace the bearings too.

Re: 954 blew spark plug out of head

When you find out what was the root cause let us know. I'm guessing a failed head gasket.

Re: 954 blew spark plug out of head

This was most likely caused by loose spark plug...
happened to my 929 bought it rode it about 150 miles blew the plug out @ around 130mph on the decell previous owner nevwer properly torqed, the plug actually will rattle on threads and wear them paper thin untill it blows out

I think his was a different problem, he said he vacuumed out a bunch of oily gook from the cyclinder after the plug blew out.

That happened to me also. The plugs must be checked every 4k miles, mainly to check that they are retorqued. I learned the hardway to not skip on maintanance.

Re: 954 blew spark plug out of head

I blew out plug no. 2 at the Isle of Mann TT when flat out in 3rd gear chasing my mate. No warning just POP & tractor noise & scooter power 25k miles on the bike.

Looking back I never checked the plug torque ever. The was a ticking sound directly related to RPM & sounded like it was only coming from 1 cyclinder - I thought it was a loose header pipe. Doh! Also lately the fuel consumption got worse & the bike didnt feel as perky as it used to. All signs I know.

Am gonna helicoil the hole & just stick the old plug back until winter when I'll do a full stripdown & maybe big bore w/ gas flowed head

Have the engine/swingarm supported on the ground & am ready to basically pull the frame, subframe & headstock off the bloc so I can get access to do the helicoil work. Anyone agree with this?? I think I should have enough room

Not having alot of luck with this bike
