16 inch front tire

after about 5 sets of Michelin`s Pilot Sport I`m wondering if there are other brands that have good soft compound for street and track use.
My 98 900RR with it`s 16 inch front wheel is limiting my options.
Any suggestions??
thanks in advance

Re: 16 inch front tire

Id stick with the Michelin, I had them on every road bike I have owned. In fact its the first thing I do with any road bike I buy.

Re: 16 inch front tire

I just bought a 16" Michelin pilot front to go with my pilot power rear and have been pleased with it so far, but next time I think I'll try a matching set of Dunlop qualifiers, or Pirelli's since they still offer a good set for the CBR 900.

Re: 16 inch front tire

Better everything. Handling, tire choice, looks.

You can use the 98-02 VFR800 6 spoke wheel for your bike. I believe that wheel is a direct bolt up to the 98-99 900RR.

Or...

You can do what I did and put a complete 954 front end on your bike and get cool upside down forks, bigger brakes and a stronger, better handling front end. As long as you get the conventional headstem bearing model from the 02-03 954, it's a direct bolt-up job. The 929 front end can also be used.

Then, you can run a matched set of Pilot Power's. These are the shiznits of tires!

Cheers,
Sime

Re: 16 inch front tire

You can also bolt a front end from the RC-51 on there. I would recommend using clip-ons from a 929 or 954 though, unless you like feeling like you are riding a goldwing... the clip-ons for the 51s have really tall risers...

just changed my front.
put a 2002 GSX1000R front wheel/ fork on my bike. I love it!
It's a total different bike. It does not ''fall'' in the corners anymore and steering is much easier and smoother.

Asujosh...have you done this mod? I heard that the RC51 forks were too short. Also, the RC51 triples look pretty average - the 929/954 triples are much nicer looking.

Plus, if the RC51 forks are workable, you'll be stuck with 320mm rotors, as opposed to the 929/954's 330mm rotors.

Re: 16 inch front tire

yes, i run it right now on the 900 i am selling. putting those forks on actually increased the ride height in the front as much as the single swinger increased it in the rear, but some of that is due to the wheel. I used a 929 top triple instead of the RC because of the shape, the RC didnt want to fit right. I believe that the forks on the RC are actually better than those on the 929 or 954, and that had something to do with my decision as well.

As far as the rotors, 320MM are plenty sufficient for the 900, since it came with smaller ones.

I think you're right. The RC51 has some kind of funky external damper on the fork base. Sounds like you have a good combo with the 929 upper triple.

- Dare I say, that's what she said?

we tried the 929 brakes, but we would have had to build a custom caliper mount, and at that point I just wanted it together so that I could ride it. It would have been cheaper since I had a set of 929 rotors laying there, but they just dont fit.

as for the RC forks, I believe it is a reservoir and that is also where you adjust the compression damping. kind of like the long reservoir tube you see behind the motoGP forks.

Re: 16 inch front tire

I don't understand why people insist on doing the 17" swap... The bike was engineered to run with a 16" why do people think they are smarter than the engineers who designed the bike? Honestly, if you cant handle the bike with the stock wheel size, and you find it dips too much in the corners. Buy a different bike. Maybe one with abs and some training wheels... Lol ok that was just a joke. But seriously if you're not an engineer who specializes in bikes. You shouldn't be acting like one... Just my 0.02 on the subject.
