If there is no such thing as a stupid question this is close.

Hey guys whats going on? I just got my first bike '99 900RR. Awesome bike but I am having a couple minor problems. I can't figure out how to hook up the plate light LED I bought. I was almost positive I had it hooked up right but no luck. I know it is not really that important to have one but why give a cop reasonable cause. I bought the bike used and there was no plate light on it. I looked up a wiring diagram online. The lights have two female ends that look like they go directly on the terminal for the plate light. I hooked up the light how I thought was correct and got no light. Switched them around on the terminal and blew a fuse. Anyway, is there a fuse that is dedicated to the plate light. Am I overlooking something, Or am I just making this way to difficult?

Also I'm new to the site, how do I get a pic of my bike next to my posts?

You state you blew a fuse, but are asking if there is a fuse?

Well the fuse I blew was actually to the speedo, tach, and N indicator. I know this sounds stupid but I wasn't sure if reversing the wires could blow a different fuse. Now that I think of it, it would not be possible to blow a fuse out of circuit. But still, maybe i connected it to the wrong terminal? Can anyone tell me if the fuse for the plate light and the cluster are on the same circuit?

LED's are diodes and they will conduct in one direction. If it doesn't have a built in current limiting resistor, it will conduct all available current, until it or something else blows. You might want to test the light, but with a resistor of some sorts. It doesn't take much current to get a LED to illuminate.

Tested the light already, it's good. Do you happen to know the wire colors the go into the terminal and what they are? I downloaded the wiring diagram but the text is way too small for me to see.

This reference card might help narrow down the wires to what you need:

Re: If there is no such thing as a stupid question this is close.

Honda uses green color for all ground wires. I believe the license plate hot wire is brown. The ground is shared with the tail light ground.

Guy above, is right. LED is a diode, it has a specific side that can be run as positive, wire it backwards and it won't work. Every time i have seen a company make an led light/s they come wired with the resistor inline already, so there should be no need to wire in a resistor. Only time you should need to solder in a resistor is if you buy the individual LED's in a package from an electronics store or wholesaler. The resistor reduces the voltage so the LED won't blow out.

If you ever were to pop open one of those aftermarket LED turn signals you would find a circuit board inside with a bunch of resistors soldered into it, one resistor for each LED light. If you ever make your own LED light circuit the resistor gets soldered to the positive side of the LED and there is no "in/out" side on the resistor, you can solder either side of it to the light.

If you do ever buy individual LED diodes buy ones that are 10,000 mcd or higher. Lower than that you get a very unbrilliant light. For 12v DC ( motorcycles ) the resistor needed is 12V/680ohms ( i think, just look on the packaging of the LED). so if you ever get an itch to make your own lights now you know
