Custom exhaust for 954

Well after being inspired by ezekiel808's genius: 954 GP pipe mod

...I've decided to have a crack at this myself.

I have narrowed it down to an Akro megaphone or a Graves GP slip on
as a starting point (the look I want, will be loud as all hell and the price is right). I ride 80-90% track days, so noise is not a primary concern. Will obviously get a custom map for the PC after final fitment.

I realise that I will most likely need a custom header made up for this (I currently have a Leo Vince slip on only, not a full system), I think it's a bit hopeful to think that I'll be able to cut and weld (or flange) my existing pipe, but wont know for sure until my new exhaust arrives.

If this is possible however, I would be happy for it to be bolted onto the existing exhaust hanger if only minor modification is required. If I do need custom headers, I think I would prefer the "traditional" R6 position.

I'm pretty determined to do this, and will muddle through myself if required, but any tips, pros/cons or advice of any nature would be welcomed - especially if anyone can point me in the right direction to a decent fabricator or exhaust specialist in Melbourne, or somewhere else in OZ...

Cheers and thanks in advance
Rob

While I agree most Aussie tracks ignore it on track days you probably should be aware that all are governed by sound regulations. In '92 I got pulled at Broadford for being _just_ over 102Db on a racebike.

not to mention annoying for every other track rider

I like the Akrapovic Megaphone, I have thought about using that too
but running just the megaphone would be an open exhaust
I am looking @ squeezing my Akrapovic can (which is already cut in half)
under the bike & running the megaphone out from it

I have to agree with that :-)
I often race with the historic motorcycle racing club and some of those old British things are mind-numbingly loud (when they eventually get them to run) despite the rules requiring them to conform to the same sound regs as we have to.

Yeah good point.

Not all that worthwhile if I'm gonna get dragged off either bladeracer - any idea what a ballpark db reading would be with just an AM slip on?

Similar to this?

I think that sounds like a more suitable outcome with regard to noise, but seems like a hell of a lot of work. I'd be very interested in progress though!

Re: Custom exhaust for 954

Your making me drool flmedic, nice bike man! In my opinion black and gold is the sexiest color combo. I like that idea of stuffing a shorty can underneath! Now all ya need to do is swap those blue top mount steering nuts with gold ones.
Does anyone know where they sell those, cuz ive been lookin to replace mine to match my steering dampner.

Hey robc i say go for it, but def go with a full setup. In my opinion it wouldn't be worth all the work for only a couple ponies via a slipon!

good luck bro!!!

Re: Custom exhaust for 954

G'day,
Any updates or new pics for these exhaust projects?

The jardine 'under-engine muffler' could be a cheap way out as I can pick up a partially damaged slip-on from a bikewreckers and hack away at it.

Though it'll need a header which has short secondary pipes so there is enough room for a decent length muffler. OR perhaps a 4 into 1 set-up, if one is available.

My other concern is that the heat in that location might kill a glassfibre type slip-on fairly quickly.

Thoughts?
