newbie looking for some help?...

ok i'll try posting here since no one replied in the intro forum...

hey folks,
i just recently bought my first "fireblade" - an '02 cbr954rr & i love it so far.
i've been lusting after a liter bike for some time now.

i have owned honda's all my life (almost literally). my 1st was a QA-50 when i was in the 3rd grade and have owned a CL125, CB400T Hawk, VFR 700 & for the past 10 years a '95 VFR750.

got a couple of questions: bike came with techlusion TFI. i have heard mixed to negative things about this fuel modifier, but so far it seems to be working fine on my bike ( no misfires, or engine bogging nor anything but seemingly smooth response thruout rpm range). does anyone on here have this on their bike?

other question: bike has >21,000 miles on it & i want to do the oil change on it. previous owner said he used synthetic oil. i'm thinking of going with a 10w40 semi or full synthetic. what are other cbr9 owners using and/or prefer?

ohhh one more thing, previous owner installed a nice micron slip on, but broke the muffler clamp/strap (the one which attaches to passenger footpeg) & used a friggn nylon strap on there. anyone have a used one or know where i can get for a reasonable price? micron wants $50 plus shipping for another one!! talk about markup!

thanks & looking forward to learning more about my latest baby

Re: newbie looking for some help?...

cant say i've even heard of the techlusion TFI, and most everyone uses the power commander pcIII, but you can check the plugs to see how the motors running. if theyre fine, and your happy with the prformance, keep it.

1st- get a honda maintenence manual (not haynes, chilton, etc.) if planning on doing your own maintenence. very easy to use and comprehensive.

I personally run Castrol R4 5w40 full sythetic and am happy with. no clutch slip, and never lose any oil between changes. I'm also religous about 3,000 mile oil/filter changes. also look into purolator oil filters...seem to be the best from what i've read. part# PL14620

I would also go completely over the whole bike and check everything, pads, tire pressure, chain slack, and all the bolt torques.

on the muffler clamp, try fabricating with stainless steel, or bite the bullett.

Re: newbie looking for some help?...

thanks flea. good info!
funny u mentioned the maintenance manual. the bike came with a haynes manual which i have used for a car i used to own & it was pretty good, but when i looked at this one i was disappointed. thx for suggesting the honda shop manual. i had one for my vfr's & it was really good & detailed.

as for checking over the entire bike, i've done already. mainly had to adjust the chain slack, but noticed the rear sprocket teeth seemed kinda worn so i will likely have to replace that soon. & last nite i noticed the micron can seems slightly loose at the base, so maybe i will end up replacing it & get the clamp at the same time.

i ended up getting some shell rotella 5w40 after reading a thread on here & the oil analysis comparison referenced in that thread (http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/Consumables.html).

hope it works out fine. i plan on changing it at my next opportunity.
