Re: Radical RC51

A friend of mine here in town just told me what he is doing to his '01 RC51. The things I can remember:

1) Nikasil (sp ?) cylinder plating
2) Custom pistons by J. E.
3) Cams
4) Titanium valve springs and retainers
5) 5 angle valve job
6) 13:1 compression ratio
7) 2 mm overbore
8) Crank totally reworked
9) Porting and polishing
10) Aftermarket exhaust
11) PC IIIR
12) Ignition work
13) Custom wheels

And other things I can't remember. All told, he said he is sinking $12K in this project, about $10K in the motor alone. He also said he is expecting to attain 190 - 200 HP. If he comes close to that HP figure, it will indeed be a scary bike to ride.

What do you all think? I think this just goes to prove how RC51 owners are!

Re: Radical RC51

I don't think he'll see 200 hp, unless we're talking at the crank.

the only bike that can make 200hp is of course the perfect, magical, better than the Honda, new for 2004, Yamaha R1!!!..

Why would you waste that kinda $$$ on an 01? He'd better rework the suspension, as the 02 is by far the most stable RC platforms.

Just for comparison, the AMA RC's that Duhamel, Bostrom and Robers ride are 200hp. To get that kind of HP, HRC has sunk around 100k to 200k to achieve it, as stated on a few of the AMA races. If you friend gets 150hp, it'll be a miracle.

Re: Radical RC51

150 to 155 is reasonable, depending on who does the work. As far as I know there are only about 4 people in this hemisphere that are worth a damn when it comes to this type of thing for a Honda road racer. I could tell you who they are, but then they would have to kill me.

Re: Radical RC51

Well I figured 190-200 HP was a total pipedream, but shouldn't he realize better than 150 HP, with all that engine work? I forget - and I ain't doin' no stinkin' search - what a stock RC puts out to begin with ..

Re: Radical RC51

There is a well known engine buidler here in town (wrenched for Robers a couple years back and built the motors for one of the indy AMA teams. Had the fortune to talk to the guy that owned the team and one of the things he kept lamenting bout is how many freaking $$$ it takes to get real power out an RC.

$10k is a lot of money but I don't think it's that much compared to what the big-boys sink into a motor.

Now, if only I had bougth that 180HP Duc mill that he'd built for Pegram... hm.. come to think of it I bet he still has it....

Sounds like fun. Tell him to be carefull though. I saw a full-tilt built RC motor that was cracked right down the center because it was making more power than the engine cases could take.

Re: Radical RC51

What are they stock, like 110-115 rwhp?

Suspension mods...he can buy a lot of nice stuff for $12k...

Or just buy a Mille R Factory.

Or a new r1.

Or a Lay-Z-Boy, a popcorn machine, a Plasma screen, an Ionic air cleaner and a cup of Starbucks coffee...

Might not be that far off. I remember something like 130 at the engine stock.

I've heard $250k for an AMA factory bike, and at that point all you have is a basket full of parts.

Re: Radical RC51

Mine makes 130RHWP with some slip ons. Most of them will be aroun 120RWHP stock, 125 or so for the '02/'03 models. There is a soft limiter before the hard limiter that most owners remove.
