Safe wiring for rear blinkers???

I took off the mudflap and got the Rizoma track 1 rear blinkers... I was planning on using the heat shield to mount and then run the blinker wires through the hole i cut in the heat shield (for the after market exhaust hanger) to run the wires thru... is there a better idea or just a safe way to do this, so the wires dont get burned?????
