Hard shifts 1-2

My bike clunks hard from 1-2, and when i shift from neutral to first it clunks to. I have noticed that when its cold it dosnt seem to do this as bad. and as it warms it gets worse...Is this just becasue the dogs on the shift forks and drum are larger for the extra pressure of 1-2 shifts, or do i have a bent shift fork?

Re: Hard shifts 1-2

Well idk about the 1-2 clunk, but the clunking when shifting from neutral to first is definitely normal.....its called the "Honda clunk"...haha.

Re: Hard shifts 1-2

well i have been riding hondas all my life and been working on them for years, but i havent dealt with the 954 much....but one thing i do know and love about hondas have been there amazing transmissions.... like cutting butter with a hot knife... well except for my first 954rr... not the case.... boat loads of power and man can it handle but the shifting is not what i would say honda parr.... but i thought maybe it was a trait of the bike...kinda like the valve tick that they all seem to have including myne....

Re: Hard shifts 1-2

A loose/stretched chain and worn sprockets can also cause hard shifts, at least that's what I was told by a mech. i struggle sometimes to shift from 1st to 2nd, especially when fast shifting, the gear slips into neutral and then there's the almighty rev and i have to deftly punch it into 2nd and then it takes. i put my bike on the paddock stand and spun the wheel. Chain is totally knackered and so are sprockets. so it may be true that is the cause. will have to keep old girl on the stand now until I find some cash to get a new chain and sprockets.

Re: Hard shifts 1-2

after 1500 miles mine shifted clunky and loudly til the 3000 mile mark, switched to Repsol semi/synth and it quieted down remarkably, for the entire 3000 mile oil changes i make. I also find i HATE riding without my earplugs. only done it a few times on the bike, but i seem to hear way-to-many noises.

Re: Hard shifts 1-2

Well does have a new chain and sprockets... funny thing is that i didnt notice this shifting last fall when i parked it.... I changed the oil over the winter to GN4 Pro honda.... wouldnt think that would make a difference but maybe it is... Maybe i will go back to my trusty spectro.... Anybody else notice oils making any difference on there bikes???

Re: Hard shifts 1-2

seem to have misread your post, sorry. you referring specifically to the clunking. well, don't fret over it. i think that's normal on all hondas. don't fix it if it ain't broke is the motto i stick by. enjoy your riding.

Re: Hard shifts 1-2

Neutral to 1st clunk is normal.

I don't notice as much of a clunk from 1 to 2 but there is a bit of one there.

If you haven't ridden all winter you are probably being hyper sensitive to sounds from your bike. Yes different oils can affect the sound and feal of your gearbox.

Re: Hard shifts 1-2

I have the neutral-first resistance and clunk too. I've found what works for me really well is if the bike is rolling at a very very low speed when I put it into first. Like taking just a step or two back or forwards with the bike at the light before I click it in to gear. Completely gets rid of the clunk. Haven't really noticed anything from 1st to 2nd.

As for oil, I was running Repsol 4T full synthetic, now I'm running Amsoil full synthetic.
