Re: What am I doing wrong?

OK, I use the Pro Honda Spray Cleaner and Polish, like a lot of other folks here. I think it is a great product BUT, I cannot get the rear of the gas tank to take a shine. You know, where the crotch of your leathers rides against it? No matter how much I polish, it is still dull in that area. Do I simply need to apply wax and then polish? And no, I don't particularly want to get a tank protector thingie.

Re: What am I doing wrong?

boy, i'm gonna catch some flack for this BUT the one product i use on my bike besides Honda Spray Cleaner & Polish ... the ONLY other product ... is called Daytona Cycle Shine. *its labeled as a 'Hi Performance Acrylic Polishing System Formulated for Motorcycle Clear-Coats, Accentuated by the Sun.'

my local dealer gave me an 8 oz bottle to try. *i apply it to the tank every few months when i notice the 'lack of shine' you speak of. *there is a label on the bottle that says -- ok, here goes -- Novelty Helmets, Inc. . *their toll free number is on their site if you wish to inquire about the product or i can see if Roger has any more laying around the shop. *i'm sure a similar wax would do just as good a job.

Re: What am I doing wrong?

You've (micro)scratched the clearcoat. If you haven't gone all the way through to the basecoat, you can carefully re-polish it with a polishing compound or a glaze. It gets applied with a foam pad. Then wax the hell out of it in order to protect it from further scratching. Often.

Re: What am I doing wrong?

Get a Tankslapper tank protecter. You can hardly see it and it works great.

Sorry, didn't realize semen was corrosive! Should have consulted with stegen before doing that maneuver.

Maybe I will just say uncle, get a tank protector thingie, and call it a day?

Re: What am I doing wrong?

Having a Black tank, it's really noticeable. My regimen is:

3M Imperial Hand Glaze
Maguires Hand Polish or #26 Yellow Wax.

The 3M really hides scratches well, but you need to wax over it.
If the scratches are deep, You can use Ardex Cut Clear. It's a Chemical Compound, the equivalent of 10,000 grit and is made for fine scratches in clear coat.

I went with http://www.second-look.com

I know you're not looking for a tank bra, but these are nice ones.

Re: What am I doing wrong?

I just went out and inspected the affected area more closely and cannot see any scratches, just a dull finish. There probably are 'micro scratches' there, but not really visible to my eyes (at my doddering age). I will try just applying a coat of good wax to the entire tank and see what happens. The more I think about tank bras, I just may get one. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions (and especially to alexandra for her comment).

Re: What am I doing wrong?

Maybe you need the 'Manssiere' or 'Bro' instead of a tank bra.
