Correct operating temperature 98 Blade?

Hi All,

I purchased a 98 Blade about 3 months ago. It's been brilliants besides a few niggling issues. First of all is a ticking noise and a slight "clunk" when blipping the throttle whilst cold. I think this is a very common issue with the cam chain tensioner as per my research.

Second issue is I think the temperature is climbing too high - possibly caused by a blown fuse fan. Sometimes it gets as high as 90 degrees celcius, or around 194 degrees farenheit for Americans. It seems it wants to go higher too, but I generally build up speed or shut the engine down when that happens. Is this normal? What is the normal operating temperature and what's a safe upper limit? Thankyou

Re: Correct operating temperature 98 Blade?

You've left some information out. You haven't said what the ambient temperature is like where you are. Is it hot? Is it warm? Is it cold?

Your existing coolant level could be low. If the temperature is climbing too fast, you may have some air within the cooling system. I'd suggest flushing your coolant (so it's good and fresh), and to make sure there's no trapped air within the system.

As for the temp gauge, your fan should kick in somewhere around 103 - 104C (218 - 220F). Your fan should then cool your bike down to 100C (212F). At least that is how my 99 900RR operates in hot conditions.

Hope this helps.

Re: Correct operating temperature 98 Blade?

I wouldn't think 90C is at all hot.
The highest I've seen was 121C on my 929 at Mallala when it was crazy hot.
It spat the coolant out when I pulled in so we both had a sleep in the shade to cool down :-)

Re: Correct operating temperature 98 Blade?

OK that answers my questions thankyou. Looks like it's pretty normal then. I'm used to just a dial with a red zone to warn when it's hot for dumb people.

It's what we'd call cold in Australia at the momement with about 13 degrees or 55 farenheit at the most. The bike only seems to get up to 90 degrees when sitting in traffic for a good long while. Since I've never heard the fan kick in I thought there must be something playing up, however seems like it's just be too cold outside to trigger it.
