Tank Protector?

First of all let me introduce myself... My name is Jerry, I recently purchased a 2008 1000RR Winning Red. I need to mount a tank protector. I was just wondering what I could use to clean the tank so the adhesive sticks well. Any Help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Tank Protector?

I just used some rubbing alcohol. When you put it on, have the bike out in the sun so the tank heats up. Also use a hairdryer to heat the tank and the tank protector up a bit before applying.

That's what i thought, I just wasn't sure if alcohol would damage paint or not. Thanks for your help. I appreciate it greatly.

Re: Tank Protector?

What kind of tank protector are you talking about?

For the standard $15 ones that protect the part near the seat, I'd clean the tank with soap and water then put on a good coat of wax before applying to protect the paint and finish underneath. No real need to heat the tank for this kind, although you may leave the sticker out in the sun or heat to make it pliable

If you're looking at tank-slappers (the clear stuff) use one drop of dish-washing soap in a spray bottle filled with water. Spray it on, then apply the sticker. It will let you move the sticker into position before you squeegee (sp?) the water out and stick it into place.......I HIGHLY recommend these things, especially with the reported paint issues of the new 1Krr. My RC used to get scuffs near the knees and the tank-slappers fit so cleanly you could hardly tell that they were on the tank.
