1st set of new tires

Ok, I just put a new set of tires on my 929. Continental sport attacks. Its my first new set of tires and Im wondering what I need to do, expect or watch out for? How long before I can stop sketchin about riding? How do I "scrub them in"? and has anybody ever had their tires spin balanced as opposed to bubble or static balanced? How much did you pay for the spin balance?

Re: 1st set of new tires

Just take it easy until it looks like all of the coating is worn off. On the street it could take a couple hundred miles. On the track it took me about 2 laps. You don't have to tip toe around but you just can't fully push. Another option is to just go to a big parking lot and do tight figure 8's.

Yeah +1 on the parking lot circles. Just keep going lower and lower until you have most of the tire glaze off. That's it.

Re: 1st set of new tires

Scrubbing in a tyre is not about wearing off the surface. It's about getting a heat cycle through the tyre. Simply riding normally does the job fine.

Re: 1st set of new tires

Oh really. I didn't know that. So what about the glaze that remains from not cornering far enough? Isn't that part still slippery even if the tire has been heat cycled?

Re: 1st set of new tires

ok so how long does it take with street riding?

Can you speed it up by going back and forth to heat up the tires?

People seem to say 100 miles but that seems like a long way to go.

Re: 1st set of new tires

I've been running my old slicks on the road for some years now just to use them all up.
I've just fitted Corsa road tyres to my race bike and it did take me a few laps to come to grips with them as they take a lot longer to warm up than I'm used to with race tyres. Basically the first lap of the day the bike understeers badly but after that it's fine.
On the road on road tyres I maybe took it easier on them for about ten kms or so is all. Hard braking and accelerating gets the tyres moving around well enough to heat them up.
