954 oil light

I have a 02 954 w/ 11,000 miles, the problem is that the oil light comes on above 4000 rpm, it just started this. Could it be the oil pump ? oil sending unit ?? Any info would be helpful. Thanks, Rick

Re: 954 oil light

You should check the oil pressure I'd say.
Is there plenty of oil in the engine?
How old is the oil?

Re: 954 oil light

The oil was just changed less than 500 miles ago , i put in 5w40 Rotella T full synth. The oil level was the first thing i checked. Iv had several sport bikes in my time and never had a problem like this. So i figured that i would hit up you guys on fireblade.

Re: 954 oil light

What oil weight were you running before and what has the ambient temperature been like?
Has the engine ever been apart? If the sump has crap in it the filter on the pump could be clogged reducing oil flow at higher revs.
The pressure relief valve is immediately upstream of the pump and before the filter. A blockage in the filter at higher revs could increase the pressure enough to bypass through the relief valve and also reduce the pressure upstream.
If the spring is broken in the relief valve that will also cause low pressure.
An unlikely problem but possible if the engine has been heavily crashed or blown up before is a cracked gallery. I cleaned a 302 block once for a rebuild and couldn't get good pressure. Finally discovered a cracked gallery inside that was squirting the oil straight back into the sump.
First, you need to check oil pressure to determine if there's a problem. You should have around 70psi at 5400rpm.
