Why would the fual pump fuse blow

As per the title... why, after a journey of 3 hours (1 to go) would the fuel pump fuse blow?

I got rescued by the rac and I checked everything except the fuses which the rac guy did. Couldn't find a fault but pump wasn't priming. Got recovered home and started stripping it down and found a fuse outside the fuse box which was blown. Replaced that and pump primes. Argh!!!!! Never trust anyone else to touch your bike is my advice - so pissed off, missed the lads weekend.

Anyway (deep breath)... I've put the new fuse in and it runs. What do I do now? Will it blow again? Do I risk the run up north again tomorrow so at least I get one night of poker? Why do fuel pump fuses blow after 36k miles, 7 years and no warning?

Help!

Ta,

Mark

Re: Why would the fual pump fuse blow

May be the beginning ailments of a bad fuel pump. Drawing a little too much at whatever point it blew the fuse. My 2cents.

Re: Why would the fual pump fuse blow

Maybe the fuse just got worn out. After 7 years thats likely to happen. I would bring a spare thou

Re: Why would the fual pump fuse blow

Unfortunately I wasn't able to change one thing at a time and therefore find out what caused it as I didn't want to miss the second half of the weekend. I swapped the pump out for my spare, checked for shorts (couldn't find anything), put a new fuse in (took some spares) and stuck some foam in to hold the fuse holder a bit more firmly and got there and back (320 miles) with no further issues.

Cheers,

Mark

Re: Why would the fual pump fuse blow

The most common cause, other than a short, of a fuse blowing is too high of a load. In your case it definitely could be the pump. You could use a lab scope and a current probe to measure the amp draw and compare it against a known good pump. A bad fuse could also be a likely problem. GM had a service bulletin about using cheap fuses from places like tool town, etc. that actually wouldn't blow and the wires were melting, so it can go either way.
