954 Puff of smoke?

I have a 2002 954 that recently bought. The service history is unknown.

When I open the throttle quickly a puff of white smoke exits the exhaust. It looks like a little bit of oil burning is going on when I do that. I checked the oil level and it appears to be exactly where it was 300+ miles ago, so overall I don't think that it is burning much oil.

The bike has just under 13,000 miles on it.

What could be the cause of this puff of smoke?

Re: 954 Puff of smoke?

if its not burning any oil ,(ie oil level not dropping)your probably worrying about nothing, does it smoke no matter what temp the engine is ?.

Re: 954 Puff of smoke?

Not sure about the temps. I will check it out as I am getting ready to leave and the bike is cold.

Thanks for the response!

Re: 954 Puff of smoke?

Fuel is generally black smoke though.
Does it only do it at start up or when you're riding?
If it's while you're riding it's probably oil or coolant so check those. Compression and leak down tests would be best if you can.
If it's only at start up it's probably just moisture in the pipes.

Re: 954 Puff of smoke?

i misread where he said white smoke, i thought this was the same as the other post about black smoke coming out when whackin the throttle hard.

No worries :-)
I sometimes get confused as well when there are numerous threads about similar problems :-)

Re: 954 Puff of smoke?

Ok, when I went out to get on the bike I let it idle for a minute and the temp was about 105F. I wacked the throttle hard and and I am pretty sure it is oil smoke. It is also running rich because there is some black mixed into it as well. After wacking it a few times it seemed like the smoke was clearing up a bit. It does appear to clear up rather quickly after the initial wack on the throttle.

I have been riding this bike very conservatively. Most of the time is spent below 5k rpms and often it's below 4k rpms. Will that make a difference?

Perhaps my "deal" (got the bike for $4000) wasn't such a deal after all?

I like the idea of a compression check. It will probably have to wait a bit since I live in an apartment. I am currently looking for a house and may have found one... may make an offer tomorrow. Then I will have a proper garage to tinker with this thing.

I do smell coolant once it warms up. I am not sure where it is coming from. It could be the exhaust, but I am not certain. It looks like the overflow tank may have a small leak in it and coolant may be seeping out.

Thanks for the replies guys.

If the compression check is bad, what then?

Rebuild the engine?

Could the rings be shot at only 12,500 miles?

Is there something that could be plugged that would cause it to suck oil down the valve guides or something similar?

Re: 954 Puff of smoke?

Is it heating up? Is it using oil? Is it missing? Do you have oil pressure? If it's not doing any of these things and there are no other symptoms I would not do anything. 12k+ miles is nothing on these bikes. I would wait and see.

Re: 954 Puff of smoke?

starting off..

white smoke - coolant
blue smoke - oil
black smoke - rich fuel mixture

so since your bike isnt warmed up yet when you are ripping on the throttle its not unusual to see smoke coming out of the exhaust, obviously you're going to notice it much more due to the fact that there arent cats/real restrictive mufflers on your bike.

but also because the pistons/piston rings havent reached operating temps the metal hasnt expanded and the clearances between the piston rings and the walls havent been sealed tight yet.

as far as the coolant smell you'l have to do more checking into the leaking coolant problem etc.

Yeah, it heats up fine. Temp is usually 180-190 while riding. Goes up to 215 in heavy traffic.

It doesn't appear to be using oil.

I have this issue warm are cold. I don't normaly rip the throttle even when it's warmed up.

I agree with you on the coolant smell. I need to dig into it...

Re: 954 Puff of smoke?

what color is the oil? does it look frothy or like it's mixed with something?

Re: 954 Puff of smoke?

It looks clean in the sight glass, but I haven't checked it any other way. It doesn't look like there is water in the oil.

Are you thinking it's a head gasket failure?

Re: 954 Puff of smoke?

It's a possibility if there's a lot of white smoke but usually there'd be a noticeable increase in temperature as well.
A compression and leak down test would rule out a head gasket failure.
